When you look at a piece of furniture in your bedroom, notice it has birds eyes and start thing it would make nice pens[:p]

Or trees in people's yards...it's all I can do to not go out and start cutting one in my cousin's yard...

200 year old maple, died last year, but diametre at the trunk has to be at least five feet...it's freaking huge! Turns into a crotch almost right at the ground, and has burls all over...beautiful tree!

They did a piece on lastnights news about people dropping off broken furniture at Goodwill. The fellow was describing a dinning room table that had to be disposed of cause it only had 2 legs. It looked to be a nice 1" thick, solid - not veniered, piece of Maple. They ended the interview with him feeding it into the compactor.

All I could do is sigh.

I am living that dream, at least for the moment.

My FIL works part time for an antique store. He sent me 8 legs from an English Walnut dining table, that he salvaged from the trash.[:D] Wish he had been able to save the top.[:(] The table was at least 100 years old.

I am trying to figure the shape and taper to maximize the number of pen blanks I cut from these. I know I will have more than I need, so I will likely offer some for trade.[;)]

it's dead, crank the chainsaw up man!!!!

Luckily, or cheapily, most of my furniture is veneered so I don't have those urges. Wait...some companies have a really strange idea of what makes a good core wood for veneered furniture...I wonder...nah! - Time to go to work!![:D]

Becca - LOML and I have done a few shows in school gyms in the last month or so. Have you ever noticed how NICE some of that maple is? A curly board here, a wildly birds eyed board there [}:)]

A friend of mine has a double-trunk red gum in his front yard that more all-burl than just trunk. Ugliest tree ever and looks like it should have died a decade ago. But, it blossoms every year. I keep reminding him that when it does die to call me and I'll bring the chain saw.

I think we all need to start telling friends and family the burls on their trees are pimples, moles, fungi and need to be removed.
