Using a dust collector is a step but using an airshield (i.e. trend, etc) will be better. They are not cheap but your health is worth a lot more.

Another option...do away with CA all together and use another product.

It can burn my eyes and nose, but not like that. You may be having an allergic reaction to it. If used in large quantities, good ventalation is important. Hang tough and others with more experience will be along shortly.

I have a problem with CA also and so far the greatest problem for me is the CA dust from sanding. The first year of pen turning, I had no problem. Then about 6 months ago, I began to sneeze a lot at night and the next day like a serious allergy. I can tolerate the fumes that burns the eyes. I have experienced this many times with wearing a respirator only. Afterwards, no problem. BUT when I sand/micromesh CA without the resparitor, the fine dust will cause sneezing within a few hours and cold like symptoms the next day. I had double vision once for about a day and a half. AFter that, I started using a respirator everytime and goggles over my glasses most of the time.

I have been woodworking as a hobby for nearly 50 years and never had a problem. Other finishes have not been a problem for me, but the CA dust has caused me some problems. Cyanoacralate: any of a class of compounds that are cyanide derivatives of acrylates.

COULD it be the cyanide compounds? IF you have some chest pains, it could be related to this - either the dust or the fumes. One way to check it is get a good respirator and a face mask. Also put a fan on mid to low speed to blow the fumes away (IF you don't have a DC), and see if that relieves the problem.

I don't have room to use the "portable" DC that I have in my 9 by 12 shed, since I also have a lot of flatwork tools. But the main reason is this is Japan where houses are VERY close together. The DC makes a HUGE amount of noise and neighbors disapprove. [V] [:(]

I like CA so well and just became good enough to pass my on critiquing that I will continue to use it. I am very familiar with lacquer, shellac, poly's, enamels and etc, but for pens I am sticking with CA, a respirator and face mask.

leehljp,
This is what is was taking about, cold like symptoms, vision problems the next morning. Also only started about 3 months ago. I've even tried different makes of CA.

I'm also thinking off getting a full face respirator from 3M.

<br />Dario,

What do you suggest as an alternative to CA??

I'm not Dario, but I have had good results with a product called Enduro. It fells slightly different when finished, but so far in my experience provides a durable coating.

Respiratory and soft tissue allergy reactions have been somewhat common among heavy CA users since it's introduction to the market back in the late seventies. These began to surface among many of the model and remote control airplane builders as CA quicky became there greatest building tool.

I am starting to use the Enduro finishing system, it may not work for all as it is a two to three day process. I have found that it is a good durable finish that give a deep high gloss shine. I have found over all it cuts my finish time by a third, I had major problems with the CA finish, both getting a lot of white popcorn finish, and respiratory problems. I am switching to Enduro and GG or sumo glue for assembly, with a few CA pens here and there when Enduro will not work.

Dario is absolutely correct about using something like the Trend Airshield. I use a Triton Powered Respirator and I can put my face right over CA and never smell a thing and my eyes never burn. I also use it when I'm sanding because the CA dust has also made my eyes burn. I don't use CA much anymore, but I still use the Triton. Bear in mind that if you switch to another finish like Enduro or lacquer, the time required for the finish to completely harden will be much longer than CA. Enduro takes about a week according to Wayneis and lacquer will take several days. With CA you only have to wait about 24 hours for it to fully harden.

With Enduro, the finish time is longer for sure. I normally do one or two sealer coats and then multiple (3+) finish coats. the process for me takes at least a week. I normally do several wooden pens at the start of a week and start the finishing process. As the week goes on, I make acrylic pens and continue the finishing process on the wooden ones. By the time the week or two is up, I have a mix of wood and acrylic pens.

Ditto. I use and love Enduro.
