I cast a few more Ribbon pen blanks this weekend for a friend, and it seems like I have had a chemical reaction between the spray paint I used, and the PR resin. The spray paint was Krylon Metallics, and the resin is Silmar 41 from Mr. Fiberglass. I painted the tubes like I normally do, and glued the ribbons on when the paint was dry. I loaded my pot, and when I came back a few hours later, it seems like the PR acted like a solvent, maybe because the catalyst is a solvent, MEKP, and removed the paint from the exposed end of the tubes. Some of the paint floated to the top of the mold, and the rest of the paint just kind of clumped up around the ends of the tube. Has anybody had experience using painted tube with PR resin, and if so, would you give me pointers to try or avoid. Thanks in advance.

How long did you let the paint CURE? If you waited just until dry to the touch, the paint did not have a chance to cure yet and wasn't ready for the PR. Cure times will vary with paint mfg., temp, humidity, paint thickness, etc.

I've not done any casting yet, bit I agree with Draken, I just sounds to me like the Paint was not totally cured.

By the way, where to you get your ribbons?
