I'm getting ready to start a razor but I have some questions. What do you do about water? Is it a concern? I wanted to turn a wood one but that seems like I am asking for trouble - do you do something special to protect it? I had planned to use CA but heard somewhere that CA was sensitive to moisture? Any help would be appreciated!

No expert here...I haven't made a razor using any timber(few with PR).....so take this with a grain of salt.

I would suggest using a stabilized blank....

Make sure you seal the ends good with ca and put thead sealer on the threaded end that will help keep the water out.

I've only turned acrylic handles for the razors I have made so I have no experience finishing a wood handle. But I did turn a deer call a while back, and did a little research on finishes for those. Because of the elements, a game call should be as water resistant as possible, so you might want to check out what people use on their calls. I dipped my call in a can of Waterlox I had lying around. Hope this helps,

Bill

I have used wenge, leopardwood and cocobolo using 20-30 coats of thin CA and use mine regularly without issue. I do not leave the razor submersed in warm water! I just shave and rinse as normal.

I have done a few wood ones. Some stabilized (No finish), others with CA. Just be sure to seal the ends with CA also. I also added some RTV into the tube before pressing the ends in, and some on the treads.

I have never tried an oil finish on a razor, but I would think that it would need to be renewed fairly often due to daily contact with soap. At least that is my experience with oil finished bowls.

Thanks for the tips but what is RTV?

CA on all of mine and 95% of them are not stabilized. I seal the ends with CA and put around 10 coats of medium on them. No issues so far. Make sure you secure the head in the razor some how. I use epoxy when screwing the head in. If not the head will continue to unscrew while using it and is a pain in the arse.

RTV is a silicon material in a tube that can be used to make gaskets. Most hardware or auto parts stores carry it. I usually have a tube around so that's what I used.

I have sealed the ends and used about 10-12 coats of CA on the razors I have done. Most of mine have been Antler with a few Osage and Mesquits thrown.
