Does anyone have a good method for finishing an oily wood so that the finish does not stay tacky for several days. I am having problems with Cocobolo, Blackwood, Redheart and Bocote. The finish is Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane Gloss in spray cans. This is on flatwork like boxes and not pens.

I have tried wiping the wood with Naptha, Alcohol and Acetone before applying the finish but it still stays tacky for several days and catches a lot of dust. The lid to one box has had to be sanded out 3 times.

Who has the magic answer??????

Let it dry in a dust free environment. A big cardboard box works in a pinch. I place the box over the part, I don't put the part in the box.

CA is a pain in cooler weather, but it sticks/holds well for me, and in spring summer and fall, cures fast. I have used it on ebonies and BOW without a problem. It does have a learning curve for some.

Try sealing the wood with dewaxed shellac first.

Make sure you use the dewaxed shellac, it can be used beneath poly. You can get it at Lowes, it is made by Zinsser. It may not say dewaxed on the can, but somewhere on the can it should say "safe to use under poly, lacquer etc".

I just point that out because regular shellac can not be used under poly.

I knew y'all would come through for me. High humidity and cold temp are one of the problems now but the wife is letting me finish small items in my office and that helps except for the dust settling on the items while the varnish is still wet. Will try a big box and see if that helps. I have the Zinsser shellac but seems to yellow the wood a little. Keep sending solutions, I'll try them all.

Many thanks!!!!!!!!!

I've got some dewaxed flakes if you want. Just mix with alcohol. I use
denatured with a little bit of butyl (gives a little better open time to smooth
out the finish) .Dewaxed shellac makes a good barrier coat because it will
stick to most anything and most everything sticks to IT. Good for those
times when you can't put X over Y .. just put a shellac coat in between them.
PM with your address and I'll throw some in the mail
