Because my son is a member of the National Deans list his been nominated to participate in the 2007 International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on Business.
He is studying for a major in International Business.
He has been invited to attend the 13 day event in either Central & Eastern Europe, the 16 day event in the People's Republic of China, or the 14 day event in Australia.

During all of these events he will be attending lectures given by prominent local business people and professor's.

Since we have some business people here I would like your opinion on this type of opportunity. The cost is substantial so it is important to know that it may actually benefit his future career as well as look good on his resume.

Thank-You for any advice.

Yup, VERY cool. I've never been to one of these, but I can see the value. It would be a great opportunity to meet "up-and-coming" and established business leaders in those countries. He'll just have to work very hard to keep in touch with them.

Ron, in my opinion you must look at your son's opportunity of more than just a financial fenefit(payback) down the road. I understand the financial undertaking on your behalf but you need to expand your horizon and consider this wonderfull opportunity that he has to enlighten his outlook regarding international business. Support him i this venture and I'm certain that you will both receive more than financial returns($$$). This is an opportunity of a lifetime IMO. with immense payback beyond hard currency.

From a personal value perspective, he will have an experience that few of his peers can even imagine. From a resume perspective (and I've been interviewing job candidates for 30+ years) it will not add much value. When I review resumes, I typically go through about 100 or so an hour. At that pace, each resume gets about 2-3 paragraphs on the first page to get my attention. Then it goes in the keep pile (a few) or the toss pile (a lot). Only the keep pile gets a thorough scan. While this is a wonderful honor and opportunity, it's a second page item.

BUT, congratulate your son for me. He should be very proud of the accomplishment.

Ron, I say you send him to the Australian one with a few empty suitcases that he can fill with wood and bring home to you!!!!

Congrat dad...the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree you know.

Thanks for the good comments!

Ryan,
I think he is probably going to want to do China due to it's economics as well as the fact that Chinese will be his third language.
Also as far as the "apple doesn't fall to far from the tree you know." I believe he must have hit a bunch of other trees on his way down![;)][)]

I have to agree with Lou. Fanstastic experience, something he will remember for a life time. Work place value - not much.

Check your local Jaycees and/or Lions Club, sometimes they help fund these things.

Ron ...... I'm not a business person but, having had 3 kids in college and being a college professor ..... I vote for finding the moola, however you can, and get him signed up. I like the idea of China, also. This will be a great experience plus it will be one heck of a feather to stick in his hat or, more importantly, his resume!

I third the opinion, great experience, little resume value. He will talk about it for the rest of his life!!!

That said, if he is majoring in international business and can speak Chinese and is applying for a job in that field, I'm not sure I agree with Lou about "second-paging" a couple of weeks in China, learning the "ropes". I might find a way to get that in the first paragraph with my "why I want to be an international businessman" statement!
(But, then, I am big on marketing and know NOTHING about international business, except they take American money pretty easily!)

As a JCI senator, I will say we never funded anyone that had no connection to Jaycees (but then, I was there when it was all guys too, suspect other things have changed!)

Hope this is sufficiently nebulous[:D][:D][:D][:D]

I have to play devil's advocate here and suggest that you research whoever it is that is sponsoring this very thoroughly. There are scams everywhere anymore and some of them sound pretty convincing on the surface. If this is something he applied for, forget my comment, but if he didn't apply for it, be very skeptical. Our son got a letter from some outfit just before he finished 8th grade, which stated the school had informed them of his superior intellect and all that and inviting him to something somewhere back east that cost about $4,000 not including travel. I talked to the principal and he had never heard of the organization and said they never send grades to anyone except parents. The stuff went in the trash.

All that said, congratulate your son for his academic success.

gerryr - here is thier website http://www.scholarlaureate.org/diplomacy/index.cfm

BTW Ron, I didn't want to hijack this thread, but........ My daughter was also nomitated for this.
It's on the level.

I've works for a very large company for the last 19 years and have done a good amount of interviewing. I would look at this as great resume material. It's also something that his experiences on the trip can be used to answer interview questions.

Any one of the three locations would be a great experience.
My Purdue professor sister spent the month of July teaching in China this year. She said that visiting was an experience she'll never forget.
I couldn't get her to bring me any Zitan though.
