Question about air compressors and HF venturi type vacuum pump

I've seen the plans for putting together the combination vacuum/pressure pot based on the HF paint pot. Looking at the specs on the HF venturi type "vacuum pump", it says the air consumption is 4.2 cfm @ 90 psi. What type of air compressor are you guys using with your pots? Does it really require a compressor that supplies 4.2 cfm or can I get by with a smaller compressor? Does a smaller compressor mean it won't create a vacuum or does it just mean it will take longer to create a vacuum?

If I really need a compressor that can supply 4.2 cfm, that is going to be a major expense to get this setup up and working. Would this type of vacuum pump work?http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98074

Yes, that pump will work faster than the venturi system. I am speaking from experience of servicing AC systems. They both do the same job, it's just one is more efficient.

Tim, thanks for your reply about the vacuum pump that I posted the link to. I'm still interested in hearing from guys using the venturi type in their system to see what they have as far as air compressors because I would rather spend about $15 on the venturi type than about $50 on the pump I linked to. But if it means upgrading my air compressor, I would rather spend the $50 on the pump than a couple hundred on a new air compressor.

I have 2 Robinair vacuum pumps that I purchased on ebay. One is a 3 cfm unit which worked fine on my smaller vacuum chamber but I upgraded to a 5 cfm pump when I purchased 3 additional, larger chambers. It works much more efficiently than the 3 cfm pump and only cost about $150 (new in box w/warranty). If you can afford it you'll probably be happier with the larger unit.

I just did away with my venturi system and bought the large vacuum pump from HF. It cost me $95 out the door and was well worth the price. I should have done this a long time ago.

I have the venturi and I'm just using a little 6 gal Porter Cable compressor. It takes me about 20-30 seconds to get a draw up to 27 inches or so. It's by far the cheapest option if you already have a compressor. I think mine is something like 1.2 or 1.5 SCFM or something like that. You don't need much. A better pump will get it done faster, but when you're vacuuming a pot that has to sit overnight, is saving 10 seconds really that important? Unless you have 30 pots and vacuum all day why spend the money on the vacuum when you can spend it on wood instead!!

Brian, thanks for the feedback. I have a similar compressor so I may just give the venturi a try. You have a nice website.
