On offense taken. My Dad, who will soon be gone for 20 years, quoted that saying so often, usually while his eyes twinkled at some pun or the other. I enjoy hearing a good pun (and this was a good one), but I REALLY like it when I can make one as part of everyday conversation.

By the way, does anyone know who the quote "The pun is the lowest form of wit" can be attributed to? This is not intended to be a trivia question. I thought it was Shakespeare, but I can find proof or disproof of that on line.

I thought it was Mark Twain. Obviously, I was wrong, based on the quotes I found.

BTW: No offense intended. Puns are just basic humor.

Here is what I found on a quick Google search:

Henry Erskine: When asked if the pun is the lowest form of wit, he replied, "It is, and therefore the foundation of all wit."

Oscar Levant: "A pun is the lowest form of humor - when you don't think of it first."

Noah Webster: "... a low species of wit."
