I have recently been attempting to cast some stainless steel blanks and rattlesnake blanks. Everything comes out really well, no bubbles or anything else until I go to square the ends of the stainless blanks, and it appears the very small wire kinda rips away at the end. It is not major chipping but enough to notice that it probably won't sell. The wire also comes out of the sides after I continued trimming what the barrel trimmer didn't cut. At one point the wire actually protruded from the pen and it was next to impossible to keep it from poking skin, which I would not even think of selling or using.

Do I need to cut the braid exactly to size and not use a barrel trimmer? Or do I need to resharpen my barrel trimmer and retry?

I noticed that applying a small layer of 5 min epoxy and stainless braid really with the air bubbles disappearing, but it seems as though after scraping the scales off of the rattlesnake skin, it looks ugly as hell and kinda doesn't even look like snake skin. Is there another way to turn or process to keep the original scales so that is at least resembles a snakeskin.

I am just a little frustrated this afternoon, I feel better whenever I make a pen at least once a day, and today was not one of those days. Any advice is appreciated.

Maybe a benchtop disc/belt sander?
I have a 5'' disc sander that i use to square the ends of all my blanks.

Took to long to type

Maybe you are scraping off too much. You should only be removing the scale cover flaps. What rattlesnake skin are you using?
The skins in the pictures have had the scale flaps removed.
Do a good turn daily!

Wow,
The blanks on the left are what mine look like, I am removing all of the scales...maybe I should just remove the clear scales not all the scales....Thank you so much for the pics that really helped.

Do you pressurize your blanks or just remove the bubbles by hand, and let air dry?

I experienced the same issues with the stainless blanks so I changed to using braided "tinned" copper wire. They are not as bright as stainless but so much easier to work with, I can cut the braid with a normal pair of scissors. As far as snake blanks goes, we don't get too any rattlers over here:wink:

Eric...

No, I do not use pressure. I do use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Do a good turn daily!
