I am having a problem that I so far have been unable to solve. I am making some blanks with the seal of the State of Ohio on them. I want the ends of the tube to have a band of color the same shade of blue as is in the seal.

Here is what I do:

Wrap the tube in foil tape and texture it.

Apply a waterslide decal (which I made and sealed with acrylic lacquer) to the center of the tube.

Apply two waterslide decals with the shade of blue I want on the end of each tube. These are approx 1/4 inch and wrap aroubnd the tube like pinstripes.

I cast the tubes in Alumilite, when finished the blanks are nice and clear.

I begin to face the blanks using a sander and jig. Here is where the problem starts. Before I even reach the tube I can see the pinstripe decal on the end of the tube begin to loose color and develop splotches of metallic gray.

I tried to solve the problem by sealing the decals with some thin CA but got the same results. This is happening before the end of the tube reaches the sand paper so I don't believe it is heat. Am I doing something wrong? Can this be prevented? I tried to find automotive pinstripe tape in the shade I want but can't even get close. Any help and advice will be appreciated.

I tried to get pictures but unable to show detail.

How long do you give the decal to dry? Do you coat the foil tape with anything as sizing or sealant to promote adhesion?

I let them dry overnight. Sealing the foil with CA is also something I tried. I also forgot to mention that I coat the decals with Micro-Sol once they are applied.

I just printed out a sticker of my stripe. Maybe that will work better than the waterslide. I'll seal it tonight and try it tomorrow.

You may need to use some of the Rustoleum Sealer JohnU told us about.

Thanks Ernie. John recommended Krylon "Preserve It". I cannot find it locally at any craft store of home improvement store. Maybe I'll order some on-line.

I use some Krylon stuff.. Picked up at Walmart.. Not home now but I can get the name.

How did that work? I am formally from Ohio and wood like to see it..

So far, not well. I will post a completed pen as soon as I make a blank that satisfies me. In the mean time, if your feeling homesick for the Buckeye State, here is a link to some State of Ohio Flag pens I made.

I've done decals on wood, not directly on the tube, but I've purchased some from fellow members and the first thing the told me was not to use the sander because the heat would do what your describing to the decal. So what I do is, I cut the excess with my band saw very close to the tube and remove the what ever is left by sanding with water on a flat piece of corian.
