I'm trying to get on the chiyogami paper bandwagon but I have run into a problem. Some papers seem to have colors that bleach or fade after casting. Here is an example of a paper with orange colors that have faded next to the original paper.

As you can see, the dark blue background, lighter blue and green leaves haven't changed much at all. However, the orange/pink blossom colors have really faded.

I used ModPodge both to attach the paper to the tube and also give it several protective coats. I waited about 24 hours after the last coat before casting. I'm using polyester resin, 3 drops of MEKP per ounce, heated a bit before catylizing, cured in the open (fairly climate controled) air.

What are you using to coat your papers before casting? Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Woah, serious color change!

It is different ink and paper, but when I do printed labels, coat completely with CA and let it outgas a couple of days.

Copy Cat! I use that same washi paper and was having the same problem.

I dumped the CA and started using, "Resin Spray Clear Gloss Finish/Sealer". It's made by Castin Craft and have NO IDEA where I got it. But if I bought it, I'm sure it was cheap. I'm sure you can Google it.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, I no longer have the fade problem. I'm pretty sure the CA was causing my problems.

GOOD LUCK!

The woodnwhimsies newsletter had a brief article about just this topic.

I believe they sell the product Andy is talking about as well.

I haven't subscribed to that newsletter, but I'd love to read that article Is it online? Do you have a link?

AL is the way to go!

It's beautiful stuff, isn't it? I can't get over the amount of different patterns...

My source for Chiyogami paper has, in stock, over 2000 different designs and color combinations! Its seemingly endless color combinations is why I like it so much.:)

I've never had the fading issue that you're having. I only use Alumilite and have stayed away from the PR for just that reason…..Just my .02¢

Oh wow! I'd love to know where you shop for paper.

One of these days I will try alumalite. I just need a pressure vessel first.

So I got my can of castin craft "Resin Saver" spray, prepared another blank identical to the one in the original post (except for the mod podge coating), and gave it a generous spray of resin saver. Will wait until tomorrow to cast and will post the results. Cross your fingers for me. :)

Well here is another attempt at this blank. I applied the paper with mod podge, but did not coat it with that product. I gave it two coats of castin craft resin spray, waiting a few hours in between. I cast it yesterday and just turned it.

It didn't fade to the same extent as it did before, but there was still some fading of the pink/orange colors. Also there is a crackle like effect which appears to be at the junction of the resin and paper. My best guess is it is shrinkage of the PR as it cured and pulled away from the tube a bit?

I have a new can of PR and will try that next in case it's just a case of old materials. Also I have a can of krylon clear sealer to try as well.

....I have not had a problem w/my casting procedure using Simlar 41. I attach the paper to the tube w/Mod lodge. Let it dry overnight. I then seal it with thin CA and again overnight drying. Do not forget to coat the ends of the tubes also. Then I cast. I did have a issue doing Black and White, bleeding and fading using the same process. I may try that paper again using a tube paint White. Good luck.... Jan

You might have paper that is not real Chiyogami paper. There is a plethora of it out there so you need to be cautious as to what you're buying. The fake stuff is offset printed and is basically just fancy wrapping paper. The real deal will have a cotton back with no color bleed through from the other side and there will be a bit of "paste residue" on the back left over from the multi-step hand silkscreening process they use to make it. The high quality paper is usually from Japan. You should not have any fade out if it's the real deal.

By the way, I use Alumilite, exclusively, and have had no problems. …Just my .02¢
