I am looking to replace my old printer which is a HP1000. I do not know what to buy. I am frustrated with not being able to get colored prints. I have bopught many cartridges over time and even gone the route of refilling my own but to no avail. I do not make alot of color copies so the ink dries up. I do not get the full use out of the color cartridges. Is there a better way for the occasional copy user. I need the ability to make copies off the computer. I know nothing about ink jet printers or any other new fandangle. Any help???

Hi John
Try looking into laser printers instead of inkjet . The initial cost is a little more but they use dry toner instead of liquid ink , so they never dry out .Laser printers can be had for as little as $150 and the toner cartridges can print thousands of pages before they run out . Just make sure that you get one from a reputable company , there are allot of scams out there that give away the printer but come without toner (ebay is famous for these scams) and toner when you finally need more can cost $50 and up per cartridge .
Try these guys , they have good prices and they are very reputable , and good customer service . I get most of my computer stuff from them and have never had any problems .

Also make sure to check out the prices of the replacement toner carts before you buy , some are cheaper then others .
I bought a Samsung from them because the toner was a bit cheaper then most .
Hope this helps and good luck

What kind of color printing are you talking about? If you want to print photos, anything less than an ink jet will not give you very good results.

ldb2000 pretty much nailed it.

I gave up years ago with ink jets and bought a laser printer. It can sit for weeks at a time without use and there is no worries about ink drying up. I pretty much recommend HPs when it comes to printers. They do generally cost a bit more, but they have been, by far, the best in my experience. As for the toner, we replaced ours after roughly 4000 pages and it was ~$65. From what I know about ink, that's like two replacements, with much less printing, and many more headaches. So far, the sacrifice for color has been worth it. If you want photo prints, use one of the available services out there; its more that cost effective. Good luck.

I will soon be replacing my printer and will probably get a laser. I print a lot of manuscripts and am going broke(er) buying new cartridges. Even getting refilled is big cost. My current is an HP all-in-one. I'll miss the scanner and copy features and will probably have to buy a new scanner also. But at about $20.00 per cartridge 3 or 4 times a month, I'll recover that fairly quickly. And, it won't be an HP.

Don't know a lot about printers, but I have a Epson Stylus CX5000 and it is a all in one and has been real good. I don't know if they still make this model, but have had good luck with Epson.

The "right' answer changes every month as new equipment becomes avaialble.

Make sure you look at the cost of the toner and the yield per toner cartridge. This gives you your "cost per copy".

Yes, dry toner will not clog, as quickly. IF your humidity is high, it can happen.

Xerox also offers a "wax" toner - very high energy use, but MIGHT work well for YOUR application.

There is no SINGLE BEST answer to your question. Sorry.

I sell Samsung (commercial line).

Be careful of cost per copy. "Aftermarket" toner is hard to find, if it exists. Samsung sells to dealers at NO margin, so discounts are non-existant.

(If I SELL at their retail, I will not cover the freight to get the product here, over MY cost. This is changing, but BEWARE before you buy!!)

I agree with ldb2000, Tigerdirect is a good company(in my opinion) to deal with. I actually looked on their website and saw that dot matrix printers are still available, and a lot more expensive than you'd think. My opinion on printers though is if you're going to be printing a lot of documents laser is the way to go, but if your going to be printing mostly photos ink jet might be better, though getting digital prints at just about any store these days has gotten pretty cheap, and you don't have to worry about having the right ink, or paper or wether or not it prints all the way to the edge or not.

Been experiencing massive printing problems with my old HP 1100a All In One printer so I looked pretty seriously at the HP 3600n that was on sale at Office Depot last week with a normal price of $500.00 on sale for $250.00. Office Max has the same deal on that printer this week HP3600n

It looks like a great deal at 17ppm color pages per minute and includes all the necessary ink toner in the box. It seems to take four cartrides so when you run out of the original supply of toner I would need to buy 4 cartridges at about $140.00 each or a total of $560.00. That is more than the original price of the printer with toner.

Someone on eBay is selling the printer for $89.00 and as set of toner cartridges for $260. Looks like the same package that Office Max is offering for $250.

Anyway, I removed the guard on my HP 1100a that is labled Caution Hot in six languages to expose the fuser element. Removed the fuser to expose the soft roller and found shards of paper with several wraps around it in a couple of places. Removed that and reassembled the printer and it works like new.

Think I will stay with gray scale for awhile longer. Any one going with the 3600n, buy several of them so you will have a supply of cheap replacement toner on hand and give the printers to your friends free.:)

As an aside,

EVERY printer has a life to the fuser. Read your manual, it will tell you how many prints it is expected to make. The fuser IS replaceable. YOU COULD do it - I could do it FASTER!! (But I charge $100, too)

The parts are usually cheaper than replacing the machine. They will usually make the machine run "like new".

Just a FYI!!
