I've taken my first steps into the world of stabilization and resin casting. I found this on Craigslist brand spankin' new and was able to get it for $325. Not exactly a steal but better than I was seeing anywhere else (locally or online). 2 gallon pot- next up is a vacuum chamber. I'm still going back and forth on whether or not to just get a lexan lid and use this for both stabilizing and casting, but am not crazy about only being able to do either/or.

That is a great deal. I have seen them beat to heck covered in paint for $385. I would go for the Lexan. Unless you are doing production you will rarely be running both at the same time. If you find the need you can pick one up later.

Steve- How do you know when all of the air is out? From what I've seen you need to be able to see if there are still air bubbles being drawn out of the wood to get good stabilization, and the pieces I'm working with are especially old and dry.

You will just have to guess at it if you can not see what is going on with the bubbles. I used to do it this way and would just leave them in longer than I thought it would take. The problem is, different wood will take different times to evacuate the air. If you put them in your pot and was not able to see, you could run it for an hour and get good results. They may not be the absolute best results you could get but it will work fine.

vacuum! there is a conversion in the library for a combo pot. Or you can gop to the alumilite web site and use a 6"PVC pipe coupler and a couple lexan covers. I have used something like that in the past.
