LOML and I were awakened at about 3:00 AM w/some very sad news. Her younger brother (Dicky) and his wife (Shirley) are long haul semi drivers and were in a fatal accident this morning in SE Colorado. Shirley was driving when a pickup pulled out in front of them. She swerved to miss the truck and jack-knifed the rig in the process. She still hit the pickup killing the other driver instantly and the rig flipped in the process. Dicky was thrown from the sleeper and died instantly. Shirley had to be cut from the rig and was life-flighted to Denver in critical condition. She is now in stable condition in ICU, but has a brain bleed, crushed shoulder and broken ribs. Maybe more, but we just don't know yet. Dicky would have been 50 next month and leaves two children and three grandchildren. His son is 28, in the Army and due to go to Iraq in a few weeks. We were all very close. Dicky and Shirley spent much of their time visiting much of our extended family. In fact, they routinely saw more of my brother and our daughters more than we do. This has been very hard on LOML and her sisters. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through these next days.

That is tragic news. Please accept my sincere condolences. Prayers up for your SIL's complete recovery and for the strength your family will need to cope.

Billy, I'm so sorry to hear this on Mothers Day of all days. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sister in law, may God Bless your family.

Billy, thoughts and prayers are given and if you need anything else you know you have another extended family here.

I cannot say,
and I will not say
That he is dead--
he is just away,
With a cheery smile,
and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered
into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming
how very fair
It needs must be,
since he lingers there.
So think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There
as the love of Here:
Think of him still
as the same, I say:
He in not dead--
he is just away.

Billy, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Ellis

I will pray for you. I know how it feels to have a close relative die. My 22 year old 1st. cousin died from lung cancer about a year ago. It hit us pretty hard. I feel sorry for your grandchildren,Billy.:(

Thanks for the prayers and kind words, all!

I thought I'd share an update. We had the funeral this past Saturday. The kids put it off until Shirley could be there. All of Dicky's siblings are still in shock, but seem to be coping better as days go by. Shirley was transferred to a hospital in Midland last Tuesday. Docs say her brain injury will heal, but she may never remember the accident (could be a blessing!). She is dealing w/her husband's death surprisingly well... better than his siblings, in fact. I attribute this to her brain injury as well based on her previous reactions to loss. According to the docs in CO the right shoulder needed replacement and would not heal at all. Docs in Midland say that replacement "may" be an option in a year or so if it doesn't heal properly (the ball is okay). The docs in CO also missed her fractured ankles. She's getting them pinned today. All in all, she's doing quite well.
