So i made a HUGE MISTAKE. I let my wife help pick the colors for the last couple of pours of my first gallon of PR. When these blanks came out of the cast, she got suprisingly excited about them. I ran out of PR, and had like 5 days without while waiting for shipment. I was patiently waiting when she announced that she wanted to do the first pour out of the new gallon. A day later, she told me that after she pours her blanks, she wants to MAKE A PEN. :frown:

It will be her first time at my lathe EVER, and i have owned a lathe for a long time.

In reality, i am excited and hope she enjoys it. I would love to have to go get a new lathe! I think the Pendants are what she is secretly honed in on. She just wants to start with a pen.

I keep trying to get my LOML involved with turning. That is why I started casting. She has alergies and asthma so it is difficult for her in the shop but I keep trying. She casts much faster than I have time to turn......

I agree with Greg..... I am sorry or Congrats.......

i let my mother and 10 year old sister try their hand at it before, they haven't set foot inside the shed since. Then again they haven't seen pics of the pendants been put up lately :biggrin:

Yeah, i don't hold much hope that it becomes a permanent thing. I am sure she will make a pen, and lose interest after that. I have taught lots of people to turn, but they only stick around long enough to assemble their pen or whatever it was they made, then the peel off, never to return.

From The Love Of HIs Life!

The upside has the potential to become of monsterous benefit to all shed hermit husbands! Believe me our Gezawa knows.

The only thing that superseeds the shed budget in our house is FOOD!

With all things being equal what started out as "Honey could you give me hand for a minute" has morphed into I (The love of his life) owns 1 lathe, 3 of the 4 kids (14,12,10) own the little lathe and Dad (Gezawa) owns all other stuff!!!! Including the new Hammer table saw and spindle moulder.

This of course means that we all SHARE!!!!! The 12 year old can't wait to cut her tapered legs out!

This weekend has seen the kids (12 and 10) use the pocket hole jig to make a most AWESOME guinea pig cage, the BIG GIRL has used it to make a very FLASH light tent for photography, the Gezawa has been massacring Yate and Salmon Gum Burls into submission on the bandsaw.............MORE BLANKS!!!!! The BIG GIRLS clock project (York Gum Burl) is about to be sanded and I'm about to tackle one of my beautiful photochromics (thanks Wolftat).

All in all I think you get the picture. It's a happy, busy and productive place. The downside being that it's usually ony quiet when the kids are in bed and we have run away out to the shed to enjoy a cuppa and a turn.

Anyway, I couldn't resist as this post has had me in fits of laughter for days!!! Luck to all you new sharers. Hopefully the DOOM and GLOOM won't be too hard to handle.

that's like asking whats the best car, there are two prominent types, Polyester resin like Silmar 41, or Alumilite, which is a polyurethane resin, both get lumped under the handle of Acrylics, Exoticblanks carries a very good quality Polyester Resin, at a decent price and Ed And his far superior half Dawn are members and contributors to the site
Alumilite also is loved by many and cursed by a few, Polyester Resin requires a much longer cure time, which if you don't have a pressure pot is a definite plus, however mixing Alumilite is much easier since it's mixed in equal parts, but you can manipulate the gel and cure time with Polyester Resin but not Alumilite.
Silmar 41 can be found at U.S. Composites and www.artstuf.com

WOOT SILMAR 41

I have never used alumilite. I guess it is a mental block for me... Anything with the word "lite" in it doesn't much interest me. I want the full calorie stuff!

Since starting this post, swmbo has decided to learn to make a bowl and pendants. She will start her bowl in the next few days, and after that, she will start whipping out pendants. PLUS she has all but taken over the PR pouring, color choosing, etc. I can sneak a batch of my own in on occasion. It is fun! She has a much better eye for these colors than i do!
