PR cost

Typically what is the cost to get started in basic PR or Acrylic blank making ?

That's a loaded question..... It is like the money you make. How much do you spend? You can spend a bunch or you can find ways to get by with little cost... They choice is up to you on what you want to spend.

Ron had several great ways of getting things at little cost but this is only the beginning.

Once you start casting and smelling that PR, it goes to your head and can be a very slippery slope on costs...... Don't tell my wife what I am spending on things...... It is our dirty little secret.....:biggrin:

Now go and jump in......

I suppose, everyone has a different definition and approach to casting but from my own experience my initial outlay costs were;

*- Pressure Pot -- $200.00 (require air compressor)
*- Cuttings boards and screws (making the moulds) -- $110.00
*- First order from the Resin supplier (resin, hardener, containers, colours, wood mixers, gloves, acetone, and other small stuff -- $180.00 (about 2 litres o resin use, with everything in it + some extras for the next time)

In all, about a AU$500.00 investment for me, to produce the first 40 Resifill (wood and OR) blanks or so. So far, the investment in the molds and pot, have produce over 500 casted blanks and approx. 200 stabilized blanks using the pot.

There are certainly some other more economical ways to cast just a few blanks, Ron's tutorials are a good example of that but, that low cost can rapidly become not so when or if, you decided to cast more than just a few. The case of the silicone horizontal single mold is a good example, as the average silicone tube cost about $12 and you make one of those molds, no good if you want to cast wood one them, nor you can fit many in the pot for pressurization while with my $110 I made 3 large horizontal molds of 7 x blanks capacity each, and made also 12 x individual horizontal molds also.

The wooden tray I made to accommodate the molds in the pot as the capacity for the 3 large molds (1 in each shelve) or the 12 singles (4 in each shelve). Again, it all depends of how many blanks you want to make at one time and how many blanks you project to make in the future...!

Cheers
George
