I am trying to get a good base coat of paint on all my tubes before casting them but the recent one i have tried have had problems...

I am using regular spray paint and spraying i directly onto the tube. 1 medium coat, and let it dry for 2 or 3 days...

Once i cast it, the paint shrivels up ans get all wrinkly...

Is it the type of paint? do i need to let the paint cure longer?

Thanks!

I don't know the answer. I've been using an enamel, applied with the little brush applicator. Only problem is the brush marks, but I'm working on it.

Is your spray paint an enamel? An acrylic?

There are lots and lots of "regular" spray paints. I paint the tubes on my snake skins and computer labels and have no problems. Some paints work and others don't. Which ones work for me? Okay, I'll tell. For the snake skin blank's tubes: Rustoleum Specialty Camouflage Paint...super flat...non reflective paint. For the computer label's tubes I paint with white: Rustoleum Paianter's Touch Wet or Dry Sandable Primer. I do rough the tubes, paint them and wait a day or two before prepping to cast.

Have you considered the problem may be too much catalyst making the curing too hot. It may be a heat problem not a paint choice problem.

Do a good turn daily!

That might be it too! right now i add about 8 drops to the amount it takes to fill 2 resin saver mold voids (not sure how much that is), and they have been brittle so i will reduce it to 3-5 drops and see what happens, Thanks!

When I get "wrinkley" tubes its usually because the layer of spray paint I apply to the tube is too thick. I spray 3-4 very light coats allowing it to dry between coats.

Works better than 1 thicker coat. YMMV.

I use 3 drops per ounce and all works fine. Maybe some measuring would be good. Use water and see how much it takes to fill the molds and go from there.
