Ok... I bought the molds, I now bought this polyester resin plus hardener plus colour pigments.

Now... i was advised this is a fine resin to cast with.. but looking on the companys web page.. there was another type of resin that claims not to shatter... like polyester... so I called them up and questioned them straight away.. thinking that I bought the wrong stuff... I was advised I didnt and that the other product was just better... but what do you guys think... please.

i dont want this to shatter when its on the lathe... i have cut resins before... but never made them... so the making process is new..

btw one last question.. do you all put vegi oil in your molds? I just seen someone do it on you tube.. so thought I would ask.

thanks for any advice.

I only bought 1kg of it... its the first one on that page...

ok I just seen the use of vegi oil to help it .. my mold is off of gadget.. and I want to protect it...

You mean you didn't get the barrel???? Imagine that. A barrel of resin. Thats alot of pens:)

You have to give us the link to both items you are comparing. I think most here are not familar with this product.

The difference is , one is Polyester and the second is Polyurethane . Both work for casting pen blanks . Polyester is more brittle but polishes to a much higher shine , polyurethane is less brittle but doesn't shine as well . Here in the states Polyester is what most of us use , Silmar 41 is the most popular brand , and Alumilite is the name of the Polyurethane that is most popular . As stated both work very well and it's just a matter of personal choice . I use Silmar 41 for the better shine , I have also used the new formula of Alumilite that shines better but it's still not as shiny as the Silmar .

thanks bud/mate for your help.. see what I did there... crossed american with english.. lol ok sorry.. no really I do appreciate your help and clarification on this matter.. I was worried when I read that and no doubt someone else staring off casting would also be worried... if you go to any of the links look at the pigments. what do you think. I cant believe they come in such a large tin.. 500g is a small paint pot!!!! I am also looking at some mica flakes.. but that will come later when I have a few pens / blanks under my belt.. anyway thank you all for your support..

Just to add to what Butch said. The other things that are important are the amount of catalyst used. The more hardener used the quicker it flashes and the more brittle it gets. I looked at the 2 products and the thing that concerns me are these water clear??? You want a clear resin. There are times an opaque resin is prefered but mostly it is clar and you always can tint it from there. Good luck in the casting field. Alot of fun to be had.
