Please only reply if you belong to the Houston Area or at least in Texas.

How many people would like to have a September Meeting? How many would show up? If nobody else around here wants to host I'm willing. Sept 10th looks good on my calendar from about 9 AM-2 PM. How about everyone else?

We can order some pizza for lunch so plan on pitching in about $5 for lunch.

If there is any requests for DEMOS please post on this thread.

SEPTEMBER MEETING

I AM A NEW MEMBER AND THIS WILL BE MY FIRST MEETING. ALVIN IS FINE WITH ME. WHAT DO YOU ALL DO DURING THE MEETINGS? DO WE BRING OUR PENS TO SHOW? ARE THERE DEMOS?

A no ONLY because I am having surgery on Sept 7th. Bummer!

Otherwise I would definitely be there.

Brenda, come on down and enjoy the meeting. I made the last one at Monty's. This was my first meeting to attend. Folks are friendly, the pizza was good. And definitely bring some of your work. It's nice to compare and get some critique. Others will have their's displayed. There is usually stuff for sale too. I know Ramon sells blanks and Monty has supplies like glue, boxes and blanks.

Should be another good time.

I'll be looking forward to the next meeting.

We usually do some demos depending on the requests. Yes, we also bring some of our pens to show and we talk about different things that some new pen turners might not be aware of like where to get the best deals, techniques.

I will also have my Carbon Fiber blanks for sale if you are interested.

A CA finish is demo is almost always a MUST-Have...Hell, Steve, I'm not sure I've ever seen your's!

If Clyde shows up, I'd love to see his technique as well...I missed the lasst one but have heard some really good things about it!

I can do a PR casting demo.

I would like to see if somebody show me how to use a skew.

Please reply to this thread with any suggestions of the demos that you would like to see, since some people have put out some ideas.

oh, and my "maybe" is because I might already have plans for that date in Sept...I wouldn't mind driving to Alvin for a meeting.

I will be there plus 1, maybe plus 2. My MIL is suppose to be coming into town around that time and may be here early enough to join us.

I sure wish someone would recommend an in-town Houston location instead of Manville, Alvin, and the like. I'm afraid I just can't afford the time and fuel costs right now to drive so far out of town. I can only imagine the members who live in Conroe and Spring (of which there are many) feel this way even more.

Now I do understand that the goal is to meet at someone's shop so demos can be enjoyed, but finding a place near the 610 loop or even inside the beltway would be one way to get a lot more people to the meetings.

I'd like to try to make this ... I'll have to see what my social coordinator has on the books before I commit.

A CA demo would be AWESOME. I'm still having trouble with that!

Parson, I'll be coming from the Katy area. If you're on my way, I'd be happy to give you a ride.

Well Sorry that you will not be able to make but we have these meetings all over Houston and not just in the south, we just had a meeting in Cypress, TX the time before last.

I agree.

So true. Cypress isn't Houston either.

I live in the Heights very near downtown and would be happy to host a meeting, although my "shop" is a bench in my garage and there's no AC. Whomever organizes these should just make a mental note to PM me when the weather cools off and we can have it here at my place and I'm betting a lot more people or different people will show up.

Now please don't read anything into my comment that wasn't intended—I'm really grateful that individual members are opening up their homes and shops to the area association members! I just wanted to say that my centrally located place is available anytime in the future, and if we work at it a little, we can probably find more centrally-located member's homes in which to meet.

While shop visits are fun, I see no reason that we can't meet at a restaurant some time as well, just to meet one another and show one another our pens.

This is the GREATER HOUSTON AREA and thus encompasses all the way from Conroe to Galveston and Baytown to Katy and anyone else that would like to attend.
Anyone that would like to host a meeting or make arrangements at a public place (restaurant, Rockler, Wood Craft, lumber mill etc) is more than welcome to do so. It was the general consensus when we started these meeting that we meet every 3-4 months. This upcoming meeting was to have been at Rockler, but due to unforeseen circumstances it had to be canceled and Ramon volunteered to host it.
If anyone would like to make the arrangements for the next meeting, please contact me or Lee, KiltedGunn.

I will be there. As for demo. I would like to see how to cast with other objects, clear cast items such as snakeskin on tube, or colorfill laser engravings on wood or acrylics. Even a great explanation will help. I have proven that trial and error do not always work........probably just need more. See you there

I know it has been mentioned before but I have not seen one yet, UI would like to see someone do a demo on photography. Maybe someone can get Jonathon (brooks803) to come to our meeting and show how he does such a great job at taking pictures.

Well Jonathon is too far away but maybe somebody can try to talk to Doc (wizard) into coming to the meeting. He is here locally. He takes some very nice pictures.

I haven't made a pen since I moved as I don't have a shop set up as yet. I would like to come especially since I live in Alvin now. I can bring a lot of pen blanks and wood to sell (really cheap). It's going to be awhile before I get set up to turn pens again.

Laser engraving color fill demo

I will be recovering from surgery for Sept 10 meeting. I can definitely demo this for the next meeting. We do laser engraving at The Pearland Mailbox Store. We will also give IAP Members special pricing.

I will try to be there. However, I feel like I live on the far side of the world, coming from Orange and all. LOL Don't seem to see a chapter around here in the Golden Triangle, nor even in Lk Charles LA. I am not very experienced in pen making. Actually I need more practice on finishing than on turning.

Hope to see you all in Alvin!

of course not, you just were not on the votes list, I sent you a PM with my address.

I am interested, but as usual, the project I am on may prevent me from attending. But I will monitor for other dates also.

IS ANYONE GOOD AT KNOCKING OUT PEN KIT PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT TOGETHER? I MADE A MAJESTIC JR. PEN, BUT FORGOT THAT THERE WAS A PART INSERTED IN ONE OF THE PRESS IN PARTS. I CANT GET IT OUT. IT HAS COST ME $50 JUST IN MY COST. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO KNOCK OUT PEN PARTS?

If you don't have a set, get a set of the Harbor Freight Transfer punches and use the best fit to tap the pen apart. If you still have touble, bring the pen with you to the meeting and someone can give you a hand.

I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT WITH A WALL STREET PEN BEFORE, BUT I AM REALLY AFRAID TO TRY IT ON THIS MAJESTIC JR. BETWEEN THE KIT AND THE BLANK, IT WOULD BE A $50 LOSS. GUESS I STILL HAVE A LOT TO LEARN. THANKS.

Brenda,
If you don't get the part out, it's still a $50 loss. Try dropping a few drops of WD40 inside the tubes and let it set over night. This will give it time to absorb and hopefully make the pen easier to disassemble. Take your time and don't try to knock out the parts all at once. Just take "baby taps", normally this will work. Then clean up your parts after you have the pen all apart. If you salvage the parts but mess up the blank, you're just out a few bucks and will have to turn a new blank. Bring it to the meeting on the 10th if you still need help, and we'll all look at it for you.
Best of luck.
Clyde
