Well after 30 years of woodworking it happened.I was cutting some squares out for a project for my wife's scrapbook classes and a kick back happened and I cut my thumb off and clipped my right hand ring finger. The thumb was reattached with a good chance of recovery. So now I am down for around 8 weeks. This just happened last Saturday and I am so bored already. Not writing this for sympathy just to ask that everybody to please be careful. Please post a lot of pictures so that I can fill my day by looking at your pens and the other things you people make.

Please be careful

Hey Michael, Sorry to hear about your accident. Things happen so quickly that there is no way to get out of the way in time. The worst thing that has happened to me so far is I was trying to drill out a pop rivet and pushing so hard the drill bit broke and drilled into the thumb of the hand holding the piece. It went into the bone and broke it, but was very minor compared to what happened to you. I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery.

Glad to hear you have a good chance of recovery. Friend of mine cut off his thumb with a chainsaw about 10 years ago and no you can barely see the scars and everything works perfectly. Hope your recovery goes every bit as well.

Sorry to hear of your accident. Glad you have a positive attitude about it. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery!!! I'll post pictures of my pens as I make them if you'll promise to give them a good critique. [:)]

Michael,

I am lifting you in prayer and praying for healing. I lost a half inch of my thumb some years ago to a fork lift. It slowed me down a tad but I learned to adapt. I personally don't miss it now but it was very sensitive for a couple of years.

Thanks for the reminder. I use the table saw all the time and a band saw often. I always watch my hands but lately, I am noticing how close my hand is to the blade during a cut and I don't like it. Each time, I visualize how a slight a movement or kickback can result in a serious accident. I never worried about this until recently.

Don't let the accident stop you; be determined, but be safe!

Sorry to hear that Mike, wish you well and a sucessfull recovery.
That is one if my greatest fears. Seems most of the time I go into the wood store,
I always manage to see one person with a nub. I have looked into that table saw where the blade stops as soon as there is skin contact. I have to say, the demo's look impressive. If I used my table saw as much as I use to, I would have one. But seems my lathe has replaced my table saw [:)]

OOOuuuuucchhhh!!!!!![:0]
Man, I hope everything goes ok and it recovers. That has got to be an eiree feeling to see a finger unattached!
I have a couple friends that are fingerless thanks to one of our local jobs here.
Seriously, my prayers go out to you.

Michael,
Sorry about the accident.. makes my thumb ache thinking about it.. closest I've come to any accident on a saw, I had a piece of wood kick off my chop/miter saw and jammed my thumb... took about 3 months before I have much strength in the left hand.. now I use clamps to hold wood instead of my hand... take care, rest well and get well..

Hey Micheal, hope you recovery is fast and hopefully not very painful. Being a nurse, I know exactly what your going through so be patient, it will get better, I promise, just make sure you do as your told ok!

Janet :)

Ouch Mate.[:0].. this is the rewards you get for doing honey do[:D].. Mate I wish you a speedy recovery[:D]. All the best

Thank you all for the kind words and prayers. Trying to type one handed is a little tough but had to convey my thanks. You know you sit and think about how it happened and can not come up with any solutions on how to do it different is difficult. After 30 years and thousands of board feet run through the saw it was just an accident. I feel like it is no different than maybe riding a bike, driving a car or anything else you do all of the time accidents will happen, no matter how safe you think you are. Again thank you for the support!!!!

Sorry to hear about your accident. 2 years ago roughly my table saw took off my right pointer finger and got down to the bone of my middle finger. It was reattached. Stick with the therapy and those tendons will stretch out. I am still doing daily finger "pull downs" with a device. It's hard to take a shower isn't it. I had to use plastic bags to cover the bandages. I have all the feeling back into the tip of the finger and most of the range of motion. It's a long road of recovery but stick with it!!![:)] Also, buy some really warm gloves for the winter. Those digits get cold, real cold fast once the snow hits the ground. It may have just been me ... but you might find that the other fingers start to take over the function of the cut off digit. I have had to force myself to use my pointer finger.. sometimes it just floats up while I am typing or griping something.
I kept the table saw; but, I took out the blade some time later and beat it to death with a hammer!!! for my mental therapy[:D]

Sorry about your accident. Reminds me of mine this past Feb. Was ripping some long maple at a 45 degree angle to make some french cleats since I was remodeling my shop. Had about 5' ripped of an 8' board when I noticed the already cut portions trying to close up. So I did what I had done before and placed my left hand behind the blade holding it down, when the blade hit something in the wood and ype the kick back occured. My thunb was sliced fom the tip to where it joins the plam, thru the knuckle and bone naturally. The Docs couldn't fix the knuckle to work, so with pens in place and several sitiches, I at least kept my thumb, but permanently stiff. The knuckle will never bend. Have feeling back but still can't grip or hold much with my thumb, but I am still making sawdust and shavings. Good luck

Rob
