Boy, you are messy...!:eek::biggrin::wink:

Seriously, I've got a 20-litre drum of Polyester to use on making pen blanks all wood and resin, my pen Resifills blanks stocks are getting very low as I have decided to reduce casting and prefer selling the wood pieces for others to cast some time ago.

I stopped using Polyester about 3 years ago and Epoxy has been the only resin I have been using, I hate the polyester smell now and epoxy has no smell so I have been more than happy to keep Polyester away but, Epoxy resin costs here are getting very high, the cost of a 7.5lt of Epoxy resin is the same as a 20 litre drum of Polyester and that made the decision for me, at least for the cast of pen blanks, most of the other blanks I cast are subjected to machining and Epoxy is much better suited.

I have had this drum for some time, I'm trying to build the courage to use it again but somehow, I'm not yet ready...!

Cheers
George

For color casts, you can't go wrong with PR. A gallon costs $50.00. Alot cheaper than the epoxy resins. The smell isn't bad. I open the doors and turn a fan on. Barely noticeable

I agree, nice blanks.

Nice bunch of blanks and I agree, for the price poly resin can't be beat. I think it polishes to a much deeper shine than Alumilite and is about 40% cheaper. I prefer the mix I get with poly as well, although sometimes I like the effect of a bunch of wispy swirls which is easy for me to do using Alumilite. I've never used epoxy resin but I'm perfectly happy turning poly. I just wear a respirator when casting and usually cast out back or sometimes with the garage door open and a fan to clear out the smell. I also get it for just under $60/gal including delivery, I can't touch that price with any other resin.

Gonna have to get some poly. You have proven to me the smell isn't as bad as I feared. Willy doesn't wanna to go in the shop if is smells like spray paint but he didn't mind the casting smell at all.

I totally agree, particularly if you are after colour separation...!

My "perception" of Polyester resin usage may have to do with the fact that in my casting beginnings and some years afterwards, I reckon I used far too many 20lt drums of this stuff...!:frown:

Cheers

Love the look of your blanks, but I don't turn PR. II guess people have different sensitivities to different things including smells.

and fresh out of the molds

For anyone in the Denver area. IAP member Ed Cypher will be doing a demo on casting at the Front Range Woodturners meeting, Nov 6th 630PM at the Rockler's store near S Colorado Blvd and Yale Ave. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The evidence shows, you had a good time pouring and casting. That's worth a lot. Nice work!

The evidence before the court is
Incontrovertible, there's no need for
The jury to retire

Since, my friend, you have revealed your deepest fear,
I sentence you to pour blanks for your peers.
