hi
can someone tell me, is it illegal to sell pirate copies in the states??
i recently ordered a DVD set of Falcons Crest from the USA, it duly arrived (today) and the picture and sound quality is poor to say the least, looks like it was recorded straight from the TV, it was boxed in what was a Video case, with a very cheap computer printout lable stuck onto it, and was shipped from china.
I have asked for my money back, do you think i stand a chance..:(

in a word NO, yes it is illegal but China doesn't honor the intelligence transfer protocol nor do the enforce copyright laws, you can buy nearly any software from Adobe, Microsoft and many others that are knocked off in China. Some times customs grabs the stuff, but not often enough [:0]

If you threaten to report them to the FBI for piracy, then yes, you probably stand a chance of getting your money back. Piracy is illegal and punishable by big fines, especially in the case of selling for profit...

Get your money back, and then report them...I'm assuming that you bought this off of ebay?

Hah! We did the same thing, ordered the full set of seasons of the 'My Three Sons' TV series. Good price. Got the package di-rect from China. Poor cover quality. Three videa cassette cases full of plain white DVDs that just say 'My Three Sons' Disc 1, Disc 2,.....and so on. Play it and the quality is not great. I think it WAS recorded straight off the TV, It still has the TV Land logo down in one corner!

no i didn't buy from ebay, it was from POWERDVDSTORE.COM
looked like a legal straight forward DVD store to me, and i paid $140 for it, and they quote:

What about your returns policy?
Our returns policy is simple. You can return your purchase within 30 days of receipt for any reason whatsoever for a full refund of the value of the product, shipping fee's are not refundable.

Lets see if that is the case... keep you posted

File a dispute with your credit card company as soon as possible. Tell them you are trying to work with the company.

The longer the time, the harder it will be to reverse the charges, if the company is not responsive.

We have been debating over whether there is anything we can do.

Just curious but why do you think this place is in the USA? Looking at their website, some small text at the bottom of a page says..."P.O. Box 642, Main Street, Charlestown, Nevis". If you look up Nevis, you will find it to be a small island in the Carribbean... far far away from US jurisdiction!

The story continues, the chap contacted me today, his name is paul and he has given me 2 options:

1. take $60 and keep the dvds
2. return the dvds for a full refund, minus shipping.

i have asked how much he would charge for the shipping to uk, bearing in mind i now have to pay to return them back to whatever address he gives me, through no fault of my own.
i await his reply...

"What about your returns policy?

Theres the key. The value of the product is ZERO. Thats why they don't think they need to refund you ;)

you may also want to let your post master know. If it came through USPS at all, then that in and of itself can be a major crime.

And I'd give them the website info posted above.

been in touch with this guys again, his name is paul and i have just posted (at great expense) the dvds back to him at this address:
jeff tick-neck
huron park
route 13a
woodstock
ontario
cananda
i hope i learn my lesson from this, i am now out of pocket (so far)about $220:(
is there anyone in canada that i could send this information to, in hope of catching someone.???
