Finished this one off today, It started as a 6" cube and I could not envisage ending up with 3 sides, because a cube is square isn't it????
Regardless, I pressed on and this is what I ended up with. Rather nice I think. If I do another one I will use a bit more specky timber.

This process would look good with a finial topped lid. Hmmmmm?

The cube is made from 3 6x2 pieces of builders pine (Pinus radiata) and I used Minwax Wipe-on Poly for the finish. First time I used this finish I was not happy, obviously I did not do it right as this one worked a treat.

Only split one thumb knuckle open.

C & C welcome as usual.

Hope you enjoy.

Bob.

I find bowls like that amazing. I am afraid to try one frankly. I keep thinking that you would end up catching your tools and causing great bodily harm. Guess I should search for a video of someone turning something like it.

Nice job. Sorry about the thumb knuckle.

Very nice Bob, funny that started as a cube, huh...???

Well made and finished, I could see was Radiata Pine but I didn't know that it had so much grain and colours, the other pics don't show it but the last pic show it well, even looks like something else...!

I understand why some people is scared to try these sort shapes, yes they can be dangerous to attempt without some experience and lots of watching other do it, even though, fingers get caught all the time, it happens to the best however, when knowing what you doing, particularly learning to see the almost invisible when turning, and turn lots of "air", things become a little easier, for sure so, everyone should have a go...!

Looking forwards to see the next one Bob...!

Cheers
George

That looks great Bob! a 3-sided turning from a 4 sided cube - sounds like one of your math problems.

Trying to figure out how you would make a lid for this?

Dave

Cut or leave a ledge around the inside just below the lowest points for the lid to sit on, then just a simple round lid with a nice tall finial.

I reckon that would do the trick.
