A friend dropped off ivory from the keys of a piano. We slapped a piece onto some very black ebony and turned it. It looked pretty good but I might try to diagonally segment it to flare the ends and expose more ivory.
Any ideas??

The ivory is just the key cover. Must be 1/32 inch thick. I already tried to glue it to Ebony and then turn it which did not produce good results. I am thinking about diagonally segmenting it. Gotta make that ivory SHOW somehow.

Try gluing it lengthwise. I saw a baton made that way... Looks kind of like a brick wall. It was beautiful. I'd love to try some. But every time I see an old piano somewhere, the keys are already gone.

I also have some piano key ivory. I haven't turned it yet (I'm also thinking about gluing it in diagonally). I'm still trying to figure out if it's legal to sell a pen with ivory in it in Canada.

Ive had some for over a year now with no time to experiment yet, but was thinking of ripping them and placing them around the tube like Butch did with his abalone shell strips. Then cast in clear pr to magnify the ivory. Maybe some day...

Johnny Unitas, how would you get the ivory flexible enough to wrap around a tube????

Here's a couple of pens I made for a musician friend. I got the piano keys from Verne here at IAP. They're from a 100 year old piano and yes, that's real ivory.

The pen standing up is the one made from the keys, the other one is the laser cut piano pen from Ken at Kallenshaan Woods.

I've tried twice but I can't get the mix right , it keeps coming out a very pale yellow . Next time I order more resin I plan on getting more yellow dye from them . I tried the dye from a different supplier and it just don't ever get yellow . When I get it you got two blanks coming from me .

Might be interesting to know....I don't know about the USA either, I think I'd want to be sure I could prove the Ivory was older than the Endangered Species Act.

Don't know about Canada but the ban on Ivory in the US started in June of 1989 and my understanding all ivory that was bought or imported before that date is legal, and pianos stopped using ivory in the 50's, so in the US piano ivory is legal to use,or sell.
