I had mentioned in a couple of posts that we were taking a trip up to Mt. Washington in NH. We got lucky and the auto road was open all the way to the top and we had a clear day, which if I remember correctly only happens about 50 days a year! The weather was nice, right around 50 or so with very little wind.

Here is a photo of the whole family..

Looks like upper NH is in Peak color... suppose to hit peak here in CT in about 2 weeks.

Going to have to do that road soon, hear it is one mean road on a car.

Tracy, strangly enough the colors really popped in the Natl. forest, but not as much every where else, but I would say that it will be peak by this weekend for sure, there is still a lot of yellow so the reds will be out hard by this weekend.

The road danger is a bit over rated I think. It's 8 miles to the summit at 6288 feet and parts of the upper road are dirt. The road is quite narrow at parts and there are no gaurd rails, but I have been up in a lifted Toyota 4Runner and this weekend in a full sized 3/4 ton conversion van. If you use low gear and you don't stand on the brakes the whole way down I can not see why anyone would have problems. There are plenty of turn outs to cool your brakes if needed.

oh, and the speed record to drive up right now is 7 minutes (for 8 miles of road without gaurd rails!)

Beautiful photos! My wife and I traveled to Maine, NH, VT and Mass. in 2001 at this time of year and it was a trip that we'll always remember. Being from Dallas, we don't see views like that! Good-looking family, too.

Frank, the train is still there, but it's a cog railway. The train is designed for steep climbs and one way traffic. The boiler is mounted at a slant so that while it's going up and down the mountian (they back down) the bolier is level. They run two coal fired trains on a cog and gear driven track.

Here is a photo of one of the trains pulling into the station.

Oh, and in the family photo, the lakes int he far back ground and the building is one of the AMC huts. "Lakes of the Clouds" You can see the trail heading to the summit from the hut. (btw, AMC is the "Application Mountian Club")
