I am going to be flying to San Diego next week and my brother's company ordered 10 pens....I don't check baggage so my question is... have any of you ever had any problem carrying on a group of pens?....they will be in boxes with velvet pouches. Thanks guys...

I can't imagine that you would have any problems at all. I travel extensively with a large "kit" that includes my laptop, projector and other electronic equipment. Included in the kit is a heavy duty T-handled screw driver that could surely be used as a weapon. The TSA folks will pick up the screw driver to move it in the kit when they "sniff" my electronic gear. I also accidently traveled with 3 pounds of large nails in a bag for almost two months before I realized I had them in there. No one ever questioned them as they went through the xray. When I finally asked a TSA agent about the nails, he said in his most official voice, "Well sir, there's no law against traveling with fasteners." I guess they're too busy taking nail clippers away from little old ladies.

Good luck but I seriously dobt that they will give you any problems at all.

Just don't carry any cartridge or bullet pens. Some people don't take explanations or demonstrations in situations like that.

How true, Hank. Many years ago, long before 9/11, I was a bullet press toolsetter for Sierra Bullets, and in the course of the job, had a habit of just placing a substandard bullet or two in my pocket to discard later. On one occasion, I had to take some friends to the airport, and had inadvertently left 3 or 4 'defects' in my pocket. When I emptied my pockets for the XRay, they saw these bullets, and said I couldn't take them with me, but they would hold them at the gate for me. These were BULLETS, not CARTRIDGES. I could've done just as much damage with a pocketful of gravel, which I'm certain they would've had no problem with at all! Go figure!

Also if traveling with fountain pens make sure that the pens have the cartridges and or pumps removed, the pressure can cause the ink to flow.DAMHIKT:eek:.

I carried about 200 pens to Washington Super Show, VERY sore shoulder, traipsing throug the airport, but the inspection guys just asked if I was "going to a pen show or something??"

Years ago, I would have made a clever comment, now I just say, Yes, a pen show!

I was traveling to Miami, FL, post 9/11 and had my carry on stuff being xrayed. I noticed the TSA agent take a small shoulder bag and run it through two or three times and had actually called over a couple more TSA agents to look at the screen. I asked if there was a problem. I was asked to empty the contents of the bag into a plastic bin, I complied. Long story short, what they had suspicion of was a plastic bodied pen with a Parker Ball Point Pen cartridge in it. When I saw the screen I knew immediately what it was. Although I must say it did look like a 30-30 shell round on the screen. I commended them on a good eye though.:RockOn::RockOn:

I fly a lot for my job and have always a selection of pens with me in my carry-on or my briefcase. Sometimes I have a small Plano box with some 15-20 pens with me. I have to show sometimes the pens to the screener, but never had a problem - I get, however, often compliments.

when I flew last week; leaving Sacramento; the line was backed up because someone was trying to take a drill through. They zipped my bags through with out a problem. When I flew home leave Salt Lake City; they made me dump everything out in a single layer in their plastic bin. Guess, it just depends on who is inspecting; if they are rushed or ????

I was taking some pens to europe, and the pens were in my backpack, and the screener had a look, and asked if I could meet her in 15 minutes near the ATM near such and such gate.
So I decided that I would (she was very attractive :p), and here it turned out that she liked on of the fountain pens, and asked what I charged for them, and bought one, and in the last few years, she has bought a few more.
Take them in your carry on. You never know who you'll see who will want one.
A friend of mine had 3 of my pens with him, and someone behind him in line asked where he got one of the pens in particular. So, my friend gave this guy my number, and he bought 2 pens. One for himself, and one for his wife.
I'm thinking that I should keep some cards handy when I fly next time. If someone compliments me on them, give them a card, and tell them I'm open for business. :D

You should be fine as long as you don't bring any pens that are disguised
as bottled water or toothpaste.

I always have 5-10 business cards in my wallet.

A friend of mine worked in a print shop. He showed me some samples.

Thanks for all your comments. I am traveling by air to a reunion of cousins and have made pens for everyone. I have a roll type pouch and will be carrying 18 pens. I would hate to lose them to the TSA folks. I will make sure they all write!!!
All of the posts are very timely.

Brother came and visited me awhile back. He's in charge of the Remington Custom Shop, and I told him to take a few 308 Cartridge Pens back with him to see if the upper management would want to carry my pens in the Remington Store.

He had no problems getting the pens on board the airplane, but he had to show them that they were pens(he wrote something with them).

MY EYES, MY EYES!

Now, this is one time I am very glad that I am not employed by any airline security. I believe a full body x-ray would be too much as well!

Arggggh, what a mental visual this has left.

Don't worry about the pens, no cartridge pens though. The fewer questions the better.

I went through 7 airport security checks in 2007 for the same trip before they took away safety scissors. Santa Maria 2 LAX, LAX 2 Chicago, Chicago 2 LAX, LAX 2 Bangkok,, Bangkok 2 Katmandu, Katmandu 2 Bangkok, They took them away before I boarded for LAX.

I have also accidentally travelled and made it through airport security with a small pocket knife, (utilikey), it looks like a ordinary key but it is several has a blade, and several screw drivers, and a bottle opener. I do not believe that I checked my bag that trip so I believe that I also had a belt buckle knife in my baggage. Airport security is a joke.
