What is your favorite pen kit to use the Schmidt DSM 2006 0.7mm pencil conversion kits from Ed at Exotic Blanks. I noticed they have some specifically made for certain kits. They do mention there may be some adaptations when using other kits. What kits have you found the easiest kits.

It seems the Mistral pencil kit isn't all that popular judging the lack of responses to my question.

Hi Dave,
I have very successfully used the Schmidt DSM 2006 0.7mm pencil conversion kits with the Cigar style pens. The Schmidt DSM 2006 also comes in a 0.5mm size and Schmidt also makes a metal DSM 2007 model in addition to the plastic DSM 2006's. I am also very interested to learn about the other models that these have been successfully (or unsuccessfully) used in.
Regards,
Dave

Does it require much modification of the Cigar pen kit to make the conversion work?

I have done pencil conversions with various twist and bolt action pens. I have used both the Schmidt mechanism and the Parker from Bear Tooth Woods. Sometimes one works better than the other depending on the kit. The modifications I have had to make is drill out the nib or trim the length of the mechanism. Both are very easy mods.

I have a question for those with experience in this pencil replacement. I get the part about replacing the ink refill with DSM 2006. When you are using the DSM 2006, how does one advance the lead when needed? Also, how does one load a new lead into it when you reach the end of one? Thanks, David

For me, the plastic version (Schmidt DSM 2006 0.7mm) was simply a drop in replacement for the Parker ink refill - no modification to the kit was required.

Usually the only modification I make is to replace any "double action twist" transmissions with "single action twist", but the Blue Titanium plated kit already came with the single twist so I didn't do anything there either. I prefer the single action for pencils because I think it makes the operation a little more intuitive when the "extend and release" action of the lead is only one direction rather than with two.

During the twist (which would normally extend the ink refill), the lead is first extended and then it is released at the end of the twist. Twisting it back (which would normally retract the ink refill) locks the lead at its extended length for writing. This is why I prefer the "single twist" transmission for pencils rather than the "dual twist" style.

To replace the lead on the Cigar style pen, pull the top part of the pen off. Unscrewing the transmission exposes the pencil converter. The converter has a little black stopper on it that can be pulled out and more lead can be dropped in. After the little black stopper is replaced it can be pumped in and out a couple of times (like a click pen would work) to make sure the lead is extending properly before screwing the transmission back on and putting the top part of the pen back on.

Regards,
Dave
