Well the other day I had a couple of friends give me a bunch of mystery wood. One buddy said all he knew it was pallet wood from South America and Africa possible some of it was yellow heart. The other buddy said he got the wood from a custom cabinet maker. Some of the wood looks like Brazilian Cherry, Tulipwood and Zebrawood. I ordered some books on identifying wood and waiting delivery. I know all of this wood is hardwood with nice grain pattern, with some nice figuring, any ideas on what “pallet’ wood might be? Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

I'm assuming he ment it was wood that was used to make a pallet. I've been told that they used to use ebony to make pallets. Not anymore though, its getting to scarce.

Tom,

Pallets generally are made of whatever wood is locally available. I heard about one guy who got a pallet from South America made of purpleheart. I used to scavenge pallets when I was in Puerto Rico for some small scale flatwork and got some interesting pieces.

Tom,
I've gotten pallet wood made of real Mahogany, African Mahogany, yellowheart, silky oak, and
other "exotics". I got a bunch of Rosewood stickers from one place.
I know a place near Webster, FL where they use black cherry for pallets and landscape & tomato stakes.
Much as I probably shouldn't admit it, I'm currently stickering cypress siding for my house
with Sapelle.
