What type of paint is good on glass. Trying for one that does not have to be baked on and can be put inside of a glass orb.

OK, here's where my stained glass background finally comes in handy. The Pebeo brand paints that are sold at Michael's are pretty good. Make sure you use the Vitrea 160 series. These are specially made for glass. You can get them as small bottles of paint or as paint markers. They do need to be baked in your oven (not a kiln). When baked in the oven, the paint is very difficult to get off. I tried a test piece once and tried to scrape off the paint using a razor blade scraper. I barely made a dent.

Tom,

From what I remember, there are 4 basic categories of paints that can be used on glass......

· Normal paints – Oils, acrylics and enamels. Oils and acrylics will wear and scratch off very easily, enamels a bit less so. (Inside an orb, this may not be a concern.) These paints are cheap, readily available and come in a wide choice of colours.

· Air dry or "no-bake" paints (formulated for use on glass and glazes). These have a little better resilience, but often require a conditioner and top coat to adhere properly.

· Thermohardening paints (formulated for use on glass and glazes). These have to be baked in a household oven, but they have fairly good adhesion properties. Items can stand light use and washing.

· Kiln fired "paints". This is the only true way to paint on glass and have it adhere permanently. But I don't think this is what you are looking for.

This should give you a brief synopsis of the options. If I knew more specifics, I could give you a better recommendation. But, I do have several bottles of Delta's glass paints that I no longer use. If these will suit your needs, send me an e-mail and I will be happy to send them to you.

Thanks for the replies.

It is my mom that was looking for it. She has some glass "vases" bulbs, she wants to paint. Along with some other stuff. She has painted for years now and doing oil painting (canvas) take along time to do and with watching my son during the day she does not have the time for those. She was looking for smaller type of projects.

We were at Michaels and the one we went to had a very poor selection of glass paints.

Dawn going to send you an email.
