$40 to $60 grand to replace the sewer is a very high price to be paid for by the taxpayers. Not to mention the time it will take the town to redo the roadway, etc.
Why not use the services of Roto-Rooter and let them auger the blob away? It works as my county just did the exact same thing to a main 15" sewer artery in my little town of Tucker. You should have seen the mess that followed the blob down the sewer line after the blob was breached.
The county retrieved many chunks of the grease and actually found the source of the junk. It was found to have been coming from an apartment complex that is basically a mexican village. Seems that all the cooking grease, oil, paper plates, dirty diapers, etc. when flushed/poured down the toilets or sinks and mixed with the cold water in the sewer line that it actually congealed into a glob of "stuff" that just got bigger and bigger with each meal they prepared.
Glad to say I was not one that had to enter that sewer pipe ... and I doubt seriously that Mike Rowe would want to go there either! Argggggggg! []
Lewiston is about thirty miles from my house, and this is the first I hear of this. Who'da thought?! Catch the late-breaking news here on the IAP! Seriously though, it does explain why I've been smelling tacos...[)]
