I never used pacific yew before but heard someone say it is a good wood for pens (I believe it is Russ?) so I'll give it a try.

How is this (1 x 9 x 25) board best cut (along the grain, biased, or x-cut)?

Thanks!

Just guessing since I've never turned it:
There's a check on the right, cut along the bias there.
On the left, measure back from the useable egde and crosscut to 6". Take the offcut, center a blank over the eyes and rip. Get as many blanks as possible from that piece.
Now, crosscut at least one blank over that deep red spot with the eyes.
You'll have some of each and can tell us what's best.
BTW, I used to think you're a nice guy but seeing this so soon after the she-oak burls it occurs to me that you're just plain cruel [}:)][;)][:D]
Enjoy,
Gary

I just had a few yews removed and saved one big root burl - looking forward to cut and turn it. It is really dark red with an incredible figure - like Amboyna burl. Yields maybe 20-30 pen blanks and some pieces for smaller turnings.

William,

Because my dentist sucks!!! LOL Then again, you already know that. [;)]

Joking aside, I really don't know how to best cut it. Don't want to waste it since it is nice and was told rare to have this figure. I guess I can experiment on the ends with different cuts and and see. Will let you know!

Yew has a bold grain. I would cut it on the bias or cross-cut to accent the grain around the burl.

Pacific Yew is also fairly weak at the grain boundaries, and usually has some small spots of ring shake. Keep the thin CA glue handy to solve that problem.

Dario - I'd suggest you cut a few samples large enough to fill a flat rate mailer that just happens to be addressed to Virginia. [8D]

I think that's a gret idea, Lou - I'll even cut you a piece when I get it! [:)]

Haven't you heard -- Gov't. regulations require that all Yew be sent to Florida for inspection. By the time it leaves here, it'll be called Y'all. [:D][)]
