I've been churning out bottle stoppers for a month, for the craft sale that my fiance has entered us in, but I thought it was time to finally make some pens.

After making my first pen EVER (a Sierra), and my first acrylic pen ever (also a Sierra) yesterday, I decided to tackle something a bit harder...

I made a baron out of some beautiful birdseye maple, did a spotless CA finish, and started to assemble...

Now, here's where I screwed up. Put the coupler's in wrong on the bottom assembly - that is, I put the trim rings in backwards - so when I pressed them on the arbor press, they retracted inside the trim ring.....

Could NOT get them dissasembled (put both in at the same time), so tried using the arbor press at an angle....snapped the trim ring and screwed up the threads. I think I'll try a cigar (both a pen and a Cuban) to regroup!

Don't feel bad Drew, I've done this many times myself with the Barons. Keep trying since this style of pen is very popular and sells well.

Sounds like this is a good time to run down to Harbor Freight and pick up a set of transfer punches for $9, or cheaper when they are on sale.

I'll guess that in the 8 months I have been making pens, I have taken apart several dozen kits for one reason or another, making the punch set a valuable tool.

Don't give up on the Baron kit.

Can't quite picture what you did that you couldn't take it apart with the infamous HF punch set.

Well, next time I take a trip down South, I'll have to stop by HF and pick up a set of those transfer punches...and about a thousand other things - might be time for a trip soon!

I tell you though - you all were right - I'm a full blown addict now. And I've gotten more compliments on my first pen than I ever would have expected. I just feel sorry for my tablesaw - poor thing doesn't see much use now that I'm a lathe addict!

My table saw is where I set my turning supplies, ie: sandpaper, MM, medium CA (on wax paper), etc. Works great as a spare table but when I do need the table saw it's a pain to clear off.[:)]

I would really like to hear from anyone that can describe how the HF punches can assist in the removal of the couplings. I have a set but really <s>can't</s> couldn't figure this one out. Help if you can, I'd really like to save the Barons that I've screwed up.

By the way Andrew, you can purchase the HP punch set from Lee Valley. They work well for most pen disassembly tasks with the exception of the couplings on the Barons.

Peter, I screw the shinny little end cap on one end of the coupler and then take a punch and knock out the coupler and then take a different size punch and knock out the other end.

Thank you Harold for sharing this technique. Have taken your advice and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the assist in helping me to save my Baron. Man, I do love this place!!!

Andrew,

You can get the transfer punches at Princess Auto on sale for $8.00 and at Lee Valley Tools for $9.00 on sale. I don't know if you have a Princess Auto out there, but if not you can also find them on the internet, and order from them if necessary. Hope this helps, I got a set a couple of months back from Princess Auto and have used them more than I care to admit, they also work great for pushing out wax plugs if you do that for glueing up the tubes.
