I'm makeing (trying) my first "shotgun" pen. The bushings fit fine in the lower tube, but...The upper bushing, and center on the upper tube side, doesn't want to go in the tube! I've used a chamfering tool, and sand paper on a punch sanded till it's very shiny. Still no fit. If I push hard it will not go in all the way, and I have to use pliers, and work at it, to remove. Bushing is .535" and tube is .532".

Is this normal? Do I have a bad bushing set? Any tips?

It's been a while since I've turned that kit but I would say it's not normal. Have you barrel trimmed the tube and blank? If so the barrel trimmer might have rounded the edges of the tube. When that happens I take a small rat tailed file and clean up the ends. You mentioned a chamfering tool. I'd think that would do the trick.

I know Rizhengs shotgun kit is way way smaller than the psi one. Is that the difference? I think Rizheng takes a 31/64 tube for the cap, and psi is whatever fits in a .410 guage shotgun shell.

I use the disc sander barrel trimming setup, and chamfer the tool after. That should be good.

Don't know who makes the kit...but it's a PKCP6010 from PSI. I got the starter set that comes with one of each plateing, bushings, and trimming sleeves. They should all match up.

The instruction sheet calls for a 12.5mmhole for the lower blank, longer, and a 9/16" hole for the upper blank, shorter. That's what I did and the tubes slid through cleanly before I glued them, epoxy.

I talked to PSI this afternoon. I was transferred to the shop, as I was explaining it to the guy...he said just a minute, I have to refresh my memory. I thought oh boy... When he came back on he asked what the number sticker was on the kit bag...and he was talking to someone on his end.

Good news and bad news...Yes they can fix my problem! Bad news is they will have to send replacement tubes. It seems there was a bad batch of upper tubes, or the wrong ones, that made it's way into the bags. He said he will send 5-6 sets of tubes for all the kits I have, and will send me a new blank that I had on the kit! I'm just glad it was a bad part not something I screwed up, and glad he's sending replacements for the other kits I have.

Thanks to all of you that sent me ideas!

I use a chamfering tool for brass cartridges. Just a couple of light turns in each end. Clear out dust and any metal. Done!
Yup, me too almost every time. But this turned out to be a bad batch of tubes. They sent me the right ones...and a new bkank too! Haven't tried it yet, but the bushings slide in just like they should. I've got 3-4 pens in line ahead of it, probably try over the weekend.
