We have one of our firetrucks and quite a few other area trucks down in Bayou Cane just south of New Orleans. They will be demobalizing about the time Ike hits. I wouldn't be supprised if they head your way. I hope that you don't need us to come your way, but were ready if ya'll need us.

Good luck and have a safe trip. I was spared major damage from Gustav except for a week of being without power and minor shop damage everything is starting to get back to normal. Hope when you get back all will be well.

Ben those trucks are in my neighborhood about an hour west of New Orleans. We still have some areas without power but with the help of all the good people from other states and especially as far north as Illinois we'll be back on track in no time.

Too early to tell here in Houston, however, not too early to at least think about. This just may be a biggie. Good luck to all you people down the coast around Corpus, stay safe.
Stays on the present course I'ma thinking we will stay, however, got the window boards ready to put up and a brand new generator to tryout.

Be safe

To all our Texas friends, we hope everyone fairs well with the coming of Ike. Our area of Louisiana took quite a hit from Gustav and I had minor damage to the house, but all the family is safe.

Take care and Godspeed

We are inland far enough to hopefully not do too bad even if it comes up north towards Houston more.
I will be looking for George and Monty's help as we are transplants to the greater Houston area!
We are from California and we are not use to this crap we like it when the ground shakes a little now an then! We now get more rain in an hour than I saw in a year in California  But we do like TEXAS!!!!

Dion,

Just load up on the Bud Lite and chips. We're gonna ride out another one. Last big one was Rita and we did travel north to friends in Ft. Worth but the storn has to kinda hit really direct to get us this far inland. Looks like we'll get plenty of rain and a little wind but it won't be that bad. We need to get together some time. I'd like to see your shop and your pens. We are only about 8 miles apart. Do you work during the week? I am 70 and retired so I got plenty of spare time. I'm in the Spring phone book, just give me a call or PM me.

Alex, God Bless you and yours. Be safe!
George, you didn't say anything about Bud lite to me when I was up there?! Did I miss something?

If you know where station 4 is, that is where our engine is stationed at. Also, if you know anyone who wants a dog they adopted a stray that wondered in and it will need a home sometime soon. You can see him on the FD blog here: http://mabas47-to-gustav.blogspot.com/

Also, if you do see the Engine from Salem, ask him (the guy from Salem) about being a "Mermaid on a mission".

:cowboy: You guys be careful, And if yall need anything let me know. I am about 30 miles south of Austin on 183 and 18 miles from I-10. Be safe and dont take crazy risks if it starts to get bad.

I hope Y'all get by safely, if they could harness half the hot air from the presidential race they could blow Ike down to the tip of South America. God bless all of you Texans and keep you from harm

I rode out Rita in Humble... I had just sold the house and was waiting for the closing date on Monday after Rita was due in on the weekend.. we had everything packed and stacked in the garage. not much more than a lot of rain, but we were a little worried.. Don't have to worry too much about hurricane's up here.

Dion,
I spent 15 years in the Bay Area.. went through a couple of shakers myself.

Alex,
take care and keep safe. My wife's aunt and uncle lives in Corpus... right on the bay... hopefully they will be safe.

LOML and myself will be riding this one out here in our house. I have stayed thru 7 hurricanes in my life, including Carla in 1961 so will be here for Ike. In fact I am in the same house that I was in when Carla came thru. I am taking the basic preparations, and will be battening down the hatches Thursday evening and Friday to get ready for Ike showing up. The latest track does look like Houston will get a good part of this one. I am more worried about the wood in my shop than anything else. If the water gets too deep, I did get my bass boat back from the shop today, so I might be able to get around in it.

They are evacuating a good portion of my county mandatory starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. I hate hurricanes. My FIL has some property with a cabin about 125 miles from here on the way to Austin, but wouldn't you know it - the path of the storm is on a bee-line straight for there, too. Time to charge up the batteries!

We who live on the gulf coast and the lower coast of the Atlantic know all about hurricanes. Just something we live with. At first it looked like it was going up the west coast of Florida and coming my way. But it moved to the west and is now aiming for Houston. You guys stay safe this one is scary. With hurricanes it not so much the wind that scars me hear on the coast. It's the water. Water is a very destructive and powerful force that is often underestimated.

You all be safe have a plan & heed the warnings, check back with us after it pases.

Same here. As soon as I get home from work I'll start picking up in the yard and boarding the windows. I"ll respond to any emails as soon as I can after the storm.

looks like it turned back far enough that they are bringing people in instead of taking em out so i was allowed to leave and go home. me and bud lite lime are gonna sit on the porch and watch the world blow by. moved the boat up closer to the house in case the river rises a lot. you guys in the houston area batton down good.

Yeah now I am a little concerned. THanks to George he is keeping the newbie informed on what to do... We will evacuate if there is a order to do so or if I feel my family is at the slightest risk. I am no hero!!!

Dion,
You're in Conroe, I would be too concerned. Just brace for verrrrryyy bad wind and lotttttttttssa rain. Be prepared if you live in a low area near a creek for flooding.

Mannie,
Yeah I think we are ready although being a californian a lot of rain use to be 1/2" now we get that in a couple of minutes here. The wind is my issue we are on 3/4 acre in a subdivision that has lots of trees that the builders left. Big PINE trees which from what I hear snap like twigs in the kind of wind we are expecting to get. Flooding should not be a concern but if we end up with a pine tree through the roof I guess that would not be too much fun either....Again I appreciate the advice and concern I am also concerned for George and his family who are only a couple of miles away from us...

Mannie,

Sure hope you and all of the others in the Houston area fare well through the storm. As of the 8pm EDT update here on 9/11, it's forecast to hit around the Galveston west beaches and follow I45 straight into Houston.

We lived in Houston for about 20 years on the northwest side of Harris County. We were there for Alicia in 1983 and other storms as well. Fortunately, we were on 'high ground', if you call 45 feet above sea level high ground!

We had a lot of 'fun' with Fay a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, it was 'only' a tropical storm but we had a total of over 30" of rain during her visit!

Take care and keep in touch when you can.

Let us know you're safe.

:)

Although pine is kinda bland, just think of all the pen blanks you'd have.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I plan on taking down my 50' internet antenna in the morning. I'll install my old dial-up modem in my computer and as long as I have power or when I run the generator, I'll keep in touch.
