Some of you may have seen my thread where my 13 year old black lab mix passed.. (http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=65526)
As hard as it was on my wife and I, it was very hard on our 5 year old yellow lab. She lost a sister, a buddy and a partner in crime.
Leaving for work every day was hell. She looked so lonely, so pathetic. Making it worse, labs have a seperation anxiety problem, where they really shut down after being alone. This was a concern, since she's always had another dog home with her.

Well, after much debate, we picked up a new puppy this weekend.
It was quite an ordeal because i've been out of town for work a lot lately and trying to arrange a deposit/pick out a puppy/pick up the puppy was quite a task.

Anyhoo, I present "Oberon", aka "Obie"
He's a 6 week old, male yellow lab.

If they would only stay that size and that cute... Great looking little feller and the picture with the other dog it looks like she is very pleased.

She's been a great big sister. I couldn't be happier.

Luckily, im on vacation from work this week (as is my wife), so we have plenty of time to be with the dogs.
Up to now, we haven't had ANY "accidents" in the house. Nothing chewed up. Nothing damaged. No negativity at all!

Well... Accept crate training at night.
Night 1, he cried SO bad. We were leaving him in there as a "tough love" type thing, but it was so bad, so loud, that we couldn't sleep. About 1am (2 1/2 hours later) my wife took him out of the crate and brought him to bed with us. He was out like a light. Then we were up every hour to take him outside. And sure as hell, he pee'd each time. Damn tiny bladder!

Last night we blocked off a section next to the bed and let him sleep there. My wife woke up once at 2am, took him out, then she woke me up at 7am for my turn. Otherwise, that was it! He didn't seem to wake up at all.

And the best thing? Puppy breath. It's so nasty, yet, its one of the greatest smells in the world!

He is really cute, looks like he will be big. I agree about the puppy breath and how their hair feels. They are so cozy too.
Dogs are great. It's hard to live without one once you've had a good one. Lost a Tibetian Terrier about a year ago and can't pass by any dog without touching it or scratching it behind the ears. Someday in the not too distant future I am sure another dog will come to live at our house.

Really cute pup Rich!
As far as the crate thing goes, I wouldn't give up on it yet. You may need to "cordon off" the crate with a solid divider. You don't want to give them too much room. They prefer it when it's smaller and more den like. We had issues with both of our goldens as well as my Mothers' new pup. Give it a try.

totally sweet! my "new" puppy is now 8 months and is she ever NAUGHTY NAUGHTY NAUGHTY.

He's do adorable - and YAY on the no accidents bit. keep it up.

One other thing on the crate...... leave it open all the time.

Dogs being den animals need a place where they can feel safe and secure. Many times the crate will become this place. They will go there when they want a nap and to not be disturbed, when they aren't feeling good, or if they are scared. DO NOT use the crate as punishment or you are shooting yourself in the foot when you need them to go in there for another reason.

Congrats on the new addition. He looks like he'll be a handful later.

Our newest is a 1.5 year old Husky and he plays so rough with the 3 year old lab/beagle that the lab/beagle has scratches all over his neck. We keep telling him that if he breaks his Buggsy, he won't get another one.

Little dogs are great companions but the problem with cute puppies, they get bigger.

He is really cute, looks like he will be big.

Dad was 110lbs and mom was 95lbs
Dad had a head that looked like a cinder block.

One of my friends has a puppy from the last litter. He's a little over a year now and he's already 80lbs.

I can't wait ;)

Oh, we're not giving up.
We might be putting it on the backburner for the nighttime, but both my wife and I go back to work next Monday and he will be in the crate then for sure.
His big sister can listen to his whining ;)

I got a call from a dog trainer friend today checking in. He gave some crate tips to help, which is cool. It's uncool that he lives in another state. Would be much easier if he was here to help in person

What a sweetie! Big sister looks so content with her new little buddy.

I love the photo with the pillow.

It looks like have a great new friend! Puppies are awesome, but lots of work....and worth every minute

Keep us posted with photos as he grows, I have never seen a dog with head the size of a cinder block.
