Hi everyone,
We have also 2 male dogs that we have rescued, just over a year ago. They were 2 years old each, one a Maltese and the other German short-hair Pointer. The little one is getting pretty close to us, from his own initiative, as he would hide on a corner and stay there for hours on end. The Pointer, is a total difference issue all together, the first owner had him to 18 months, he couldn't handle him so they said, the second couple come along and only took 6 months for them to have enough, them was us, and 12 months later I can say that what did traumatize this animal, where a series of accidents and events that we find out, but we only know half, and maybe never will know the full story, but as beautiful, intelligent and docile in the right circumstances, he still does't like to have his food in a dish and be taken to him, if you got in in your end, walking towards him, he simple runs away! Another one is with his toes, it does nor allow anyone to touch his toes, and if you try, he simple bites. Clipping is toe nails, and unfortunatelly, not having hard surfaces like cement or pavings for him to file them naturally, they really grow very long and sharp, ripping one apart every ofter, making him very protective of his feet. A trip to the vet for nail clipping, involves a $120 needle to put him to sleep while the vet trims then out! plus the $45 for the clipping...!
All because when he was young he cut his pow very badly involving surgery and treatments of the value of $900
But you now, our last 12 year old great_dane pet dog, dyed of cancer a few months before we got these 2, in the last 8 days alone of his life, he spent $2.000 to try to save him, but in the end, he died in the operation table, leaving us with a broken heart and some difficult vet bill to pay, but we don't regret a single cent spent with him, we was our own company, and the best loyal friend anyone can ever have.
Is difficult sometimes to take a animal home that has issues, most of the times, not a their fault but, a traumatized and miss-treated animal, requires lots of attention and time, but sooner or later, thee animal will understand he/she is most loved and looked after, and as far as I can tell with animals, you will get back twice as much as what you give!
Good luck with him, your other dogs hopefully will assist you with the task!
Cheers
George
