My son-in-law (scoweyjoh) and I attended the recent GA Chapter meeting to watch Jonathon Brooks do his PR casting magic. It took a few weeks to assemble all the materials and equipment required, but we took a shot at it today. The photos below are of our second attempt. The first became a bottle stopper blank when the blue set up too fast to pour into the mold. I poured almost immediately after catalyzing on the second attempt and had better success. We weren't trying to get too fancy, just a two color pour with a 2 to 1 ratio of Pearl Ex Duo Blue-Green and Macropearl. I couldn't wait to turn one round and polish it to see the results.

Thank you Jonathon (Brooks803) for the great demo and thanks to Andy Little (Penman1) for his many instructive posts, which I finally got to put into practice.

Looking good! I want to make a mold like that but how do you mix the colors for swirls, etc - or do you just mix in the cup, pour and pray :)

Bob, tell me you had shorts on underneath that apron. Holy cow you're freaking me out.

Next thing I'll read is how much fun it is to cast blanks half naked!

The vertical mold doesn't allow you to swirl like you would do with the horizontal tray style, so you need something to dip into the mold and twirl as you draw it back up. I watched Jonathon closely and he uses a heavy wire device (I call it his magic wand) that has a hook at the end and a couple of bends along the length. He dipped it in just a few times and swirled it slowly as he brought it back out. I fashioned mine in a similar manner using stainless welding wire and emulated his manner of using it. I think I did well with the swirl, but the pigments I used aren't contrasting enough to really show it in a photo.

The mold was purchased from Fred (PTownSubbie) who was also at our meeting. I should have bought another of these molds when I had the chance, because I think I'm hooked.

Looks great Bob! I love that blue, it's so bright and vibrant. The bug has bitten :hypnotized: and the infection has spread :doctor:....my job is done

Don't forget to save me a blank for my demo commission!

I guess I could have used a better photo. Here's one just to prove I'm not trying to set a new trend in casting.

Bob, I think they look great. They're much better than my second attempt  I was able to make a pen out of my third attempt but it's still not what I want.

Bob - a pen out of one of those great blanks ought to be worth two lunches at the Blue Willow Inn - extra fried chicken!!!!!!

Funny you should mention the Blue Willow. My wife asked tonight if we could go there sometime soon. She also gave me orders that the first blank will become a handle for her new razor. Guess where I'm eating next weekend, and who's getting a new razor.
