I made a Tulipwood pen for a friend and gave it to her several weeks ago as a gift. So she was thinking about Christmas and decided to order 10 pens made from woods of my choice... and I am not even in the pen making business!!

People do love these little pens we make. Each pen I give away is like a seed. Takes a little while to sprout but sooner or later the fruit comes back to you!

Yep. I made a corncob cigar for a friend almost a year ago. He is in sales and one of his customers deals in agricultural chemical treatments. They saw his pen and I just got an order last week for 10 corncobs for them to use as corporate gifts.

This is also the reason I don't give away my "seconds". Eventually someone sees it and I don't want anyone to think that is my normal quality standard.

Congratulations on the order Bree, it is certainly true that you are planting seeds for future sales. Just make sure you never run out of business cards to accompany the `free` pen.

Wow! There is some wisdom here!! I was thinking about giving away one of my botched pens because the botch doesn't affect the functionality of the pen... but a little voice told me not to do it. And you have given the underlying reason.

Botched pens now become my shop pens!

I didn't know anything grew in Buffalo. lol.gif

My seconds get broken down and used for other things. Over the past two years, there are some real nice pens that I am going to have laser engraved, with Texas or something on it to see if they will sell as a novelty item. Watcha tink??

You're a good sport.

Every pen I've given away (except to my wife) has resulted in at least one sale, some have generated substantial orders.

And sometimes I just feel like giving stuff away. It makes me and the recipient feel good.
