Finally....

I got the rest of the stuff I needed to get going and am starting to make my first slimline. So far it's been a learning process

I've learned:

1: I need to redo my homemade centering jig on my DP for drilling the blanks, it has too much flex in it...

2: A complete redesign of the jig on the band saw is needed too.. It just plain bites.

3: I made the tubes too long (1/4 instead of 1/8 longer) and that's a bear on that pen mill I have. (I need to upgrade my pen mill or redo the way I mill them.)

4: Gorilla glue works, but I still had to reglue a tube (forgot to rough them up before I glued them)

5: And I forgot to order finishing supplies.... So I need to figure out something there.

Hopefully I'll be able to turn the "broomhandle special" tomorrow night...

And I'm really having fun....

Sounds like fun. We all had to start out somewhere. I have been through a couple of designs on the drill press and the table saw jigs.
I use the one below for drilling, and one similar to this for cutting. I am moving into drilling on the lathe though. Will be much more accurate.
Just a thought.

Just got the first slimline done... I'm pretty stoked about it.....

I fell a bit short of the bushings and all I put on it for a finish was stain and that was it... But I'm still learning...

Thats just fine. Under turned is pretty common for beginning turners. You tend to go too far trying to "fix" something. That'll fix itself pretty quickly. Practice makes you better. It doesn't take long either. The basic shapes are pretty easy to get figured out. For now, concentrate on technique and fallowing the bushings. Finishes come fairly quickly too. The simpler ones don't take long. I started with the typical friction wax bars and moved up to poly then on to CA.

Good luck and have fun. And remember, there is always an answer here somewhere.
