So my son's 2nd birthday is on the 16th, we have him covered, my 31st is on tuesday the 14th, and my girlfriends is on the 24th. We decided to get eachother a gift to share, so we picked up a Samsung blu-ray player from Walmart today. I like the live netflix streaming option the most. It says on the box wireless LAN adapter required, but upon opening the manual at home, it says only a samsung wireless LAN adapter can be used. I founf it, but it is over $70.00, and I can only get it online. Does anyone know where I can get one a little cheaper or if anyone on here has one they want to get rid of? Here is the modelI am looking for.

I'm not electronics expert, but I do know about how Walmart works so maybe you want to start here. Walmart does not sell the same thing that Best Buy or a similar store does. If you check the model numbers they are not the same... they do not have the same features. They are "basically" the same, but the "the" same. I don't know if that's what's going on here, but it's something to check on.

Hope you get it up and running!

Thanks for the reply. I checked into it and even people who purchased the same unit from best buy had to buy the adapter seperate as well. This really sucks.

I'd be a little surprised if you have to use the Samsung dedicated wireless lan receiver. Assuming you already have a wireless LAN set up in your house, any USB 2.0 wireless receiver should work. Pick up one @ WalMart.

Just be sure of a couple of things, 1st your SSID is < 8 characters in length (old school, but better safe than sorry) 2nd be sure your WLAN encryption is set enabled. I would guess that encryption is required, but check your manual to be sure.

HTH,
Joe

Joe,
I was thinking that, but when I checked the samsung site it says that others wont work because the unit is programmed for 3rd party adapters. I was thinking it has to be bs because they all do the same thing.

I think they have you over a barrel.

I don't believe a garden variety LAN adapter would work with this player. After looking at Amazon, it appears that not even all Samsung lan adapters will work. One guy bought this adapter instead of the one referenced by his manual and it wouldn't work.

While some of what you said may contain a bit of truth, blaming WM or anyone else for something Samsung designed, just makes about as much sense as blaming Walgrens for a doctors mistake on a prescription .

You have to use their adapter, the drivers for it are preinstalled and their isn't any way to install the drivers for the other WLAN units.

When I was looking into purchasing a blu-ray player I went for the PS3 instead of a stand alone. Feature for feature no other player can match it, plus I have never had to wait for a firmware update to watch a movie; a guy at work had a movie for almost two weeks waiting on a firmware update so he could watch the movie.

On a positive note, even though you had to pop for the wireless adaptor, you will have one of the nicest Blu-ray players in your neighborhood. You'll be able to stream from Netflix, and it will upconvert to high definition. Buying the dedicated WLAN adaptor is annoying, but Samsung makes nice electronics, and you should be good to go after hooking it up. My TV is a 61" Samsung DLP, and it is SWEET!

Scott.
