I have been skimming over the many posts here and I decided to order myself a mould (which I have done) the reason for this was because I wanted to put names etc inside a pen... maybe add a little colour but try something new... As I never have done casting before.... I know nothing!!! yep zip ziltch nada....

I noticed someone put something up about casting tubes... is this the bit that goes over the copper pen tube that I wrap what ever I want around???? if so where do you get these?

thanks and I appreciate the advice in advance everyone!

Lets say for argument sake you are doing a slimline and want to cast a name in it. The tubes you will be putting the name on is usually a brass 7mm tube. These are available from several sources pre cut and in 10 inch lengths. These also need to be painted or powder coated so you do not see the brass tube after casting. I dont cast yet but am getting ready so this is about all I can help with. Now if you are refering to what to cast it in there are several option I am aware of. One being a homew made or purchased round mold from people like PTstubbie or Newlondon88 and others.. On the cheap PVC (white) and CPVC (tan or cream color) have been used with some good results with a coating to keep it from sticking to the sides.

Hi this is easily done, there are several ways to do this one way is to use a resinsaver mold which holds the tube suspended and you pour the resin around the tube and the ends are sealed bu protrusions in the mold cavity, the name part can be done either by Laser engraving after casting and finishing, (many trophy shops have the equipment and are reasonable) second is to do the name on an adhesive label and insure an accurate fit on the tube and my favorite way is to use a water slide decal or transfer. here are some links to these topics in the library http://content.penturners.org/articles/2005/embedding.pdf Here are a couple of older threads related to label casting,http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32406 if you need or want any info on water slide decals PM me and I'll see if I can help you out.

Thanks for those links... but on the first link it shows the process to cast.. I dont see the copper tube anywhere... what is that around it and that piece they are useing is what I want to have a logo on... they then pour in the clear resin... I understand that bit... but have they made a mini pen then covered it with resin? I am not sure if this is making any sense... but I am confused... ahhh!

You can also do this without casting . Turn your barrel to final size and sand with your usual method then apply a waterslide decal and put a finish on the completed barrel . This is the simplest method and can be done over any type of material but looks really good on a light colored wood .
