You guys are always torturing me with your exquisite pens. I can just never get the kind of excellence that you guys display routinely on a daily basis. So I confess that I do enjoy torturing you all back when I can!! :tongue::tongue::tongue:

And today I got the chance. I went over to Woodcraft to pick up a #2 Taper drill chuck for my lathe. While I was there I started browsing and moving wood around and low and behold look what I found!!!

It's an excellent 8"x8"x4" block of Ambrosia Maple. I thought, "That's unusual because the Ambrosias are packed in there pretty tightly." Most of the Ambrosia boards are widely spaced. So I pick it up and turn it on its side and lookee here...

Wow!! This thing is packed with Ambrosia and down to pen blank size!!! That is pretty rare at least around here. So onto my pile of goodies it goes.

I continued rummaging around and what else do I find but these beauties...

Figured Asian Satinwood. I found two 3"x3"x12" blocks and a 6"x6"x3" block (not shown). I LOVE Satinwood and its very hard to find in WNY. So onto the pile the three blocks go!!

I suspect some of these will go to pens and some to pendants but whatever they go to, I got me some KILLER wood today!!

And to top it off I got a really nice adjustable carbon fiber walking stick kit for 75% off... $6. Turn a nice handle, glue it up, assemble and walk, walk, walk!!

Oh sweet torture!!! Enjoy!

You definitely have some sweet revenge there, Bree.

Beautiful pieces! Although if your Woodcraft is anything like mine here, then you paid dearly for them. I'm afraid to ask...

.

way to go Bree. They closed down my woodcraft about two months ago and there is no place else like that around here. Called the main office and they said the store owners shut down kind of quickly on them. Ans i used to go rummaging over there about once a week. Guess everything comes from the internet now.:frown:

They were all about $20 each... $18.99@ for the Satinwood squares and something like $22 for the Ambrosia. While it was full price, I was happy to get the wood and pay the price!!

Now I have to figure out what to do with them all.

This is a jibe to support your local merchants whether for wood turning or anything else. Someone asked me why I shopped at a local store instead of HF or the internet? My reply was that I wanted them to stick around because if I needed them it was an advantage to me to have them here.

The local lumber yard carries a good selection of exotic woods, and they sometimes call me when they receive a highly figured piece of wood. Sometimes they give me a box of off-cuts or trims. Useless for furniture or cabinet making, but good for pens and other doo-dads.

HEY BREE I WAS AT WOODCRAFT WHEN YOU WHERE AND YOU DIDN'T SAY HELLO!!!! You can thanks Charlie and Alton or I might of beaten you to that piece of wood. but as it is they stocked me up pretty good plus I just picked up 400lbs of Corian in a trade before I went to woodcraft.

LOL! no for real I was talking to owner Sally brought her husband some blanks I just poured Saturday. Are you a member of Turner's II club? Meeting This Thursday stop in Would love to get together with a fellow local pen turner.

I didn't even know there was or is a Turners II club. Do they have a website? I am a member of WNY Woodturners club. They roped me into to doing a demo for the March meeting on penturning or pendant turning using the Joyner plate.

So you made some blanks for Bruce? Is he going to use them himself or sell them in the store? I didn't know that you were from the area. That is very nice to have ANOTHER somewhere close by!!
:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Aha Karin! I am a member of Turners I and you are in Turners II. The website is the same for both I think. Our meeting is on the first Thursday and yours is on the second. Good deal!
:highfive:

Yes you got the meetings right I just sent you a PM. Feel free to pop in this Thursday if your free. Last Month we got snowed out. I just gave him the blanks I made to play with. If you want to get together Thursday or perhaps another time I will be happy to bring you a few of the Blanks I am making so you can try out and give me an idea of how they are good bad or indifferent. I sent PM with my phone info and stuff. Look me up.

Not if you go to Olean :wink:

The last time I was down there he didn't have any. But ya know supplies are always changing. I just haven't had a chance to go down lately. Plus I have so much wood that I need to get making stuff rather than buying stuff!!
:cool::cool::cool:

Nice wood find, Bree, but don't sell youself short on your pens, either -- you turn out some beautiful stuff in my opinion.

-Barry

Thank you Barry... I am going to try to improve and use the techniques I am learning here to produce lots of new things with a little zing to them!!
