Sorry it has taken so long for me to get started. The address for the meeting is 107 Anthony St. Tuckerman. We need to get a demo or two. I'm going to bring my lathe over and Dave Gunn said he could bring his if we could use two. I know there will be another step in kitless pens. If anyone has something they would like ,speak up. I probably could get Eugene to show how he makes his rolling pins. I could do a simple segment if anyone would be interested. I will post directions a little later. I'm open for ideas on demos. My friends said they would make chicken spaghetti and lasagna. I guess we can bring what we want to drink and if you want to bring something else that will be fine. Becky said she would make banana pudding. I'm doing this on my phone so I hope it makes sense. :)

Demos

I talked to Bob and hanau sent him a set ofcarbide tools for the va turners and we were thinking it might be a good demo to make handles for the tools. I'm going to ask Eugene if he would show how he turns his rolling pins also. If it's not too much trouble I think it would be cool to have two lathes , but do we want to miss one demo while watching another? We have a while to think about it. Ted:)

What times are the meetings?
For kitless pens, will you be demonstrating the thread making any time soon?

I am in MS but there are no meetings over here or in the Memphis area, and since I am only 7 miles from the MS river, 30 miles from Memphis, and have a daughter and 5 grandkids in Augusta (well 4, with 1 at Ouachita Baptist), I figured I might try to meet with you Arkansas fellows. Not 100% sure about being free on that day, but I am going to try - if you don't mind.

I mentioned this to Scott a couple of weeks ago.

lee, our meetings start at 10ish usually till 2ish. How's that for precise? We would be glad to have you. Always good to meet other turners. Hope you can make it. I'm not sure what kitless part will be shown. Scott would be better to respond to that question.Ted:)

There will be threading done at this next meeting. The plan is to show all aspects of a kitless pen over the course of meetings this year. Next up is either the barrel or cap. But both involve threading.

Anyone is welcome to attend. We'd be glad to have you. In fact we'll have a guy that's in the Air Force at this next meeting who's stationed in Japan right now (Weren't you over there for awhile?). He was stationed here, but moved over there last year. He's back for a few months of training, and is supposed to do the kitless demo.

Sorry guys, I won't be there. Training was cancelled between October-December, the next class is in January but my wife is pregnant and due in February. I'm going to push off the class a few more months and hopefully make it back next summer around June. I'll be there two full months so I should be able to make a meeting, at least I hope I can.

I appreciate the open door policy!

I got a call yesterday about a class reunion on that date (22nd) over here. I told them I had a previous commitment (2). I still am trying to change one other meeting that has been scheduled since June.

I have to get my priorities in order! Pens first! Thanks.

Looks like I will miss the October 22 meeting. I am having hip replacement surgery on October 4 and I seriously doubt that it would be good for me to travel that soon. I'll ask the surgeon and then decide based on how the rehab is going.

Freddie, I hate that you are going to have to miss the meeting but your surgery hopefully will get you where you can attend many more. Prayers for a smooth surgery and a speedy recovery. Ted :)
James, I was hoping this was going to work for you. Maybe next time. Congratulations on the baby. We should have our second grandson in a couple of weeks.

I've been thinking ( hurts my head) we might cut, drill, and glue some blanks for the va turners while we are at the meeting also. I'm sure Ken could use the help. It sounds like they are getting everyone involved in the turning. Keep up the good work. Do I need to do some of the turning on the handle so it goes faster? Ted:)

October meeting

Well, it's October. Meeting time is getting closer. What do you think about the handles for the turning tools? Don't everyone talk at once.

I think it's a great idea. I don't know how many have turned a handle, but it should be easy enough. Plus we'd be doing something for the VA. And if we drilled & squared some blanks, all the better.

Well it looks like it is about 225 miles from here to there & that much back again! The way I drive over 3 hours each way! I may just have to send some blanks again! I have several already drilled & a few finished with tubes glued in....

Phillip, I wish you could make it , but I sure understand. I think Randall is working in Louisiana with disaster relief so I don't figure he can make it either. Hoping we can have a good turnout.

Oct.2016 meeting

Well, it's one week away from meeting time we need to get a count on who is planning on being here. My friends are ready to start cooking so I need a number.

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING

Coming north on hwy 67 go to exit 87. It doesn't say Tuckerman on the sign but it is the best way to get there. Turn left go over the highway then 3 miles to a tee. Turn right and go almost a mile, then turn right on Hulen street. Go two blocks then left on Anthony street. Pass two houses on the right then there is a metal building. That is it. The address is 107 Anthony Street Tuckerman. If you have any trouble finding us call my phone: 870-217-1004

Here's a special thanks to Teddy, Allen & Allen's wife (seems shortimers is getting to me, I can't remember her name) for hosting our meeting yesterday. Allen kindly let us invade his man cave, and his wife cooked us lasagne for lunch along with all the fixing.

We didn't really do any demo's, but instead turned 4 tool handles for carbide tools for the VA. Because of the smaller size of the group, we all took turns shaping the tools. So each is a mixture of styles. A special thanks goes to John Austin (aka hanau here on IAP) for donating the 4 carbide tools for the VA.

Eugene gave us a tutorial on how he makes his segmented rolling pins, and displayed his rolling pens. I didn't get a picture, but I think Dave did.

We broke our rule though. WE didn't set a meeting date before we ate. We did set a place though. Ronnie Hallsell (our newest member), was nice enough to let us twist his arm into hosting the next meeting. We do need to select a date though.

Ken gave us an update on what's happening over at the VA as it relates to pen turning. They are increasing the number of lathes to 8 (3 are still on a slow boat from China). And to top it off, now the doctors at the VA are prescribing pen turning as therapy. I don't know have many tubed pen blanks were donated, but the was a good sized box.

Here are several pictures I took at the meeting.

It was a great time. We got the 4 (very custom) handles done for the turning tools for the VA hospital.

We ate some GREAT food, if you wasn't there, you missed out.

Eugene did a good job showing his rolling pins and his rolling pens.

A special thank you to Teddy for organizing this and to Allen and his wife for the hospitality and the food.
