I stopped by Michale's on my way home tonight and used that 50% off coupon (thanks Bob) and bought some of the casting craft stuff. Now what do I do with it? I know I need to make/buy some molds but what is the easiest way or best things to use for coloring? I know that some paints work but also that some of them impede the curing of the blank. Also is it better to make a large block and cut it into 3/4 x 3/4 or is it better to make the molds that size when starting out? Thanks for any info you can post this newbie to the adventures of casting. I know that the first couple of batches are probably going to be marginal at best but would like to at least have a good starting point.
Thanks
Russ

Found the library

I just found the wealth of info in the library so never mind the above questions unless you have some additional info about makeing it easier the first time around. Sorry for taking up forum space.

Since you can print another coupon go back to Michaels tomorrow.
In the rubber stamping area the have (at least mine does) a set of pearlex pigments.
It is a set of 12 colors. If I remember correctly they are about $24 standard price so use to 50% coupon. My store has two different sets of 12 so don't forget to go back on Saturday for the other one.

THese have some nice colors and they don't seem to mess up the cure or anything.
About two scoops with the end of a popsicle stick is good for 6 oz of resin. YMMV.
These will give you a good start. I am sure you can get the stuff cheaper from artstuff but this lets you see a little of each color.

Russ , some here use powdercoat powder to color their resin , some use liquid colorant they buy from the different resin distributors and some like me use the powders , mica and such , they buy from several different beauty supply houses .
I use the mica and glitter powders from Coastal Scents , www.coastalscents.com , they mix well for me and give very nice colors and effects (swirls and such) and the prices are great , $3 to $5 for a 1 oz container ( 1 oz will last a long time and make lots of blanks ) .
As for molds there are a couple of guys right here on the IAP that make silicone molds in several different sizes , I have a couple from Gadget and Modelmaker sells them also .
I have also used Prescription pill bottles and just coat the inside with a coating of Vaseline to keep the resin from sticking .
Hope this helps .

No pressure pot is need for PR if you are doing plain casting (just colors), when you start throwing in object that air bubble can hold on to, that's when the pressure/vac comes in.

Mine castings have all been done in a baking pan sitting on a step or on my deck. In fact I got 2 gallons of PR in yesterday and hope to make some blanks this weekend.

Went there at lunch and got one of the 12 packs. Was about $13 out the door with the coupon:

Nice...I need some of those pearlex colors too. Off to Micheals..forget about the one a day idea too. Get the item, go put it in the car and head back into the store! No it was not me in here 4 minutes ago!!!

Thanks for the post of the coupon...

No problem guys, glad that so many got some use out of it, I know I did! Got a Clear Cast and cat <and of course, my mr. fiberglass order came that same day!>, both pearl -ex series and a white acrylic paint, just in case :) I see them on dealsofamerica.com quite a bit, them and joann's, which Michael's takes also, so I will toss them up here as I see them.

Russ-
My standard reply to questions like yours is to take a look through my Color library . I should also include
the library here as well.

I have the perl-ex from Michaels and some of the coastal scents mica powders that were
being sold here (I'm too lazy to dig up who was/is selling them), but I've not yet gotten
them cast and samples of them added to the library. So if anyone else wants to make up
some casts and send me recipes/pictures, I'd add them to the library.
