Some startled responses here, but this is no ordinary chuck. It took a long time to plan and develop to this stage and, like everything that comes from Vicmarc, is superbly engineered and manufactured! So what if it's only painted!
I only wish I could own one, maybe someday.
I visited this shop in Arlington, Massachusetts, called the Old Schwamb Mill. I'm guessing about 10 years ago now... before I started turning.
In this shop there was an oval lathe that was driven by an overheard pulley system and leather belts. I was watching this guy turn an oval picture frame that was about 20" x 30". It looked scary!
I noticed, as the frame was spinning, the place where a person would hold the gouge would always be in the same place. I thought that was the neatest thing.

Norm Abrams had a New Yankee Workshop show some 8-10 years ago - he visited the Old Schwamb Mill. Not only showed he the oval lathe and how they make the oval frames, the main reason for the visit was the old desk of the owner. Later Norm made this desk is two shows. Was one of the old roll-top desks. That lathe looked real scary, but that was before I turned.
Thanks for the links!
