Hi peoples,

Yesterday, I ended my day in a very bad way, I only wanted to dry the excess moisture from the Hairy Banksia pods I had cut that day, before I would put the resin in however, the large bag I had the pods in, got a bit wet from all this rain we had recently so, I notice that when I was cutting the pods into pieces and normally I put them in a aluminium tray and on my shop oven at 70° for 90 minutes and the moistures dries out and I get them cast before they get too cold.

This time, I had the pods already in the molds, as they were breaking apart while I was cutting them so, and to avoid extra handling and more damage to them, I started putting them in the molds as I was cutting them so, I had 3 of my large molds full of the Banksia pods and that needed some oven time.

I have put those molds on the oven @ 90° many times an they don't melt so, I though that would be a good idea to take them upstairs to the house and put them on the big oven (would fit 4 of those molds at one time), for about 90 minutes, I was going up to get dinner so, that would be drying while I was up. The plan was to come down to the shed after that drying time and put the resin is put them in the pot and leave them sleep overnight in there.

I don't like to use the house oven or microwave for my stuff, and that is the reason why I have both type units in the work-shop however this time I didn't thing that would be much of a problem as, at 70° wouldn't be hot enough to get any smells in the house.

Didn't someone say that, even the best plans are prone to fail...??? well, that was what happened, it happens that, the oven thermostat has been playing up but, I didn't know, the wife got used to it and being an old oven, she didn't think that was much of a problem as she had options however, I knew nothing about it and for some reason, the wife was so busy doing some of her stuff that, she took no noticed on what I was doing.

We finished dinner and no smells so, I went to the computer room doing some computing while the pods will complete the 90 minutes in the oven. The wife got too comfortable in the couch and she went to sleep when all of a certain, I starting smelling something pretty nasty, something that I knew from where it was coming from, by the time I smelled it and turn the oven off, it wasn't a lot of smoke but the contents in the oven where looking pretty "distorted".

I quickly grabbed an old towel, got the tray the molds were seating on outside and down to work-shop I went, trying to salvage the most I could, before the mold would get cold, and with the cold temps we are experiencing at the moment with 4 or 5 degrees after dark, wouldn't take long for the plastic to go hard and I wouldn't be able to salvage much...!

I manage to salvage most of the Banksia pods, and 5 of 6 of the molds ends that are a lot thinner than the rest but, didn't melt as the thicker parts of the mold, did.

So, I'm down on 3 of my 7 major molds and the worse part of it all is that, is getting very difficult to find those thick kitchen cutting boards, I used to make the molds, they have become also very expensive @ about $50.00 for a 12 to 14mm thick board of about 1' 1/2 square or less, ,I need 2 of those to replace the burnt ones...!

So, what did happen...???
Well, the way I see it is, the oven thermostat accepted my 70° setting and for at least 40 minutes, it kept at those low temps but, at some stage, the temps went up, and I mean, they get to go very high in a short period of time, it went from OK and no smell to horrendous smell and all melting inside so I would say the thermostat went crazy from 70° to probably 250° in no time at all...!:mad:

I didn't escape unhurt, oh no sir...! has anyone experience getting stuck in their fingers, hot melted plastic from the hot glue guns well, that how this melted stuff felt when I tried to get the Banksia pods out of there, it sticks to the fingers and gets hotter as you go, it does really hurt, damn things...!

Anyway, the wife wasn't happy with the smell in the house that, was still present today, I got her some nice automatic spray pumps, with nice smells so, the house was smelling a lot better after that, and those things will be continuing to spray a few times each day...!:smile-big:

Interestingly, someone have asked me not that long ago, how long would these type molds last for, I remember that I said that, would be many years before I would need to replace them as nothing from normal casting would destroy them, and while I was perfectly correct, I forgot to mention that, on the other hand, stupid mistakes or possible accidents could destroy them quite quickly...!:frown::redface:

Lesson learn...!

Cheers
George

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope you have good luck in finding the material you need to make new molds.

My wife and I once rented an apartment that came with a brand new GE gas stove. We quickly learned that it was turning itself on!

When the repair man came out to fix the stove he commented that the model we had did that a lot. Of course, when we bought a home and got a gas stove for our home we got a different brand.

I have had my moments of that "sinking feeling", when I knew some attempt or another of my efforts had gone bad. One, many years ago, was a situation similar to yours: I had just sprayed the side panels of my new Honda Gold Wing a different color, placed them in the oven to "bake" the finish, and alas!!, they had taken on a completely different shape while residing in the oven!:eek: (Paint job looked good though.) :) I feel your pain, except for the part about the hot fingers.:frown::bulgy-eyes:

Well shoot!

I am sorry for your problems but I thoroughly enjoyed your storyline! lol Looking on the brighter side, it was actually hilarious from my perspective...because...been there done that in other situations....
