I got my DIW burl from Nolan today and all I can is WOW, actually there are no words to describe this stuff.[:p][:0][:p][:0] The pictures did not do it justice. Thanks for sharing, Nolan.

I agree! I received my DIW burl yesterday and it is AWESOME!! Now, I am trying to decide which of the pen kits would do these blanks justice. I am leaning towrds the Jr Gent FP or Rollerball in TI or Rhodium but not sure. I think Black Chrome would also look good. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions. I hope somebody helps me make up my mind, Please?

Rob

I don't plan to use any platings other than Gold or Black Ti, Rhodium and Platinum. This wood is too good and too rare for anything less. I'm not going to turn mine into anything less than full size Gents and Statesman and possibly Havanas. I want maximum wood showing.[:p] This ain't no slimline wood.

I, too, received mine yesterday - talk about fantastic service - and they are absolutely stunning! They are, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful blanks I have ever seen - I certainly hope Nolan is able to score some similar pieces in the future...

Since I ordered two of the 7/8's size, they pretty much scream "Emperor", so there's not much question as to how they'll end up (although I still have the rollerball vs. fountain pen issue to resolve - probably end up making one of each). The toughest thing might be giving them up - I may have to sell one and keep one for myself!

Personally I would not use this wood on an Emperor. With the Emperor, Lotus and Imperial, you want a relatively plain wood that isn't fighting with the glitz in fittings. Using a simpler and plainer kit like the Gentleman will let the wood be the attraction. But, that's just my opinion.

Gerry, When I get home I will check and see if I have any of the full size Gents or Statesman. I'm not sure, but I don't think I do. I know I have the Jt. Gents and Jr. Statesman. I also made a mistake in my previous post. I meant Black TI, not Black Chrome. If I have a full size, that is what I will use. Which do you think would look better tho, the Gold, Or the Black TI?

Rob

Gerry is correct on this one. It is pretty hard to find a good looking wood that is not too plain or too fancy when used with the kits that have embelishments as those mentioned. We had Nolan search his inventory to find us something for a special order of Emps and Jr Emps.

Rob,
Turn the wood on the tubes then set(not press)it on the center band of each and see what looks best to you. I think your decision will be based on how much sap wood is on your blank and how thich and how many dark grain lines are in the blank

I received mine a few days ago and it's amazing stuff. Much appreciated Nolan! As a beginner I also appreciate all the comments as to what y'all are planning for this wood. I'm definitely saving it for something special.

This is definately not wood a beginner should work with. Please send it to me. I will send you some more appropriate wood.[:D] I'll send something that will smell a lot better. DIW does not have a nice smell.

Chris is right, you need a gas mask to turn DIW.[}:)]

My comment about it not being slimline wood is based on the cost. If you pay $5.00 for a gold ti slimline kit and $16 for the wood and then use the 3x factor that seems pretty popular, you have a $93 slimline. Steve Roberts might be able to sell one for that, but I wouldn't even try. Besides, turning a gorgeous 3/4"+ blank into a 3/8" diameter cylinder seems like a sacrilege to me. If you're good enough and can cut one blank into 4 slimline size blanks, go for it.

Both Chris and Gerry are right you need a gas mask and also 99% of the population breaks out in a terrible rash so send them to me as I'm completley non allergenic and as far as the gas mask goes I'm a hippie child of the 50's and 60's I've inhaled much worse.[}:)][}:)][:D][;)]

LOL, very happy eveyone is pleased with their purchases. Go slow and take your time with it. As so many have said it is super rare especially in this quality, typing that makes me wonder why I sold it [:D]. Not really, I really enjoy finding top notch wood and selling it to the group at a fair price. And for those who didnt get any or just want more I am working on finalizing the purchase of 500 lbs if I get the price where I feel it needs to be to make it marketable to the folks who only see the price and not the rairity of the product. Simple terms cheap enough most will buy it. If not then I cant sit on that much of this expensive of a burl. Even though I may never see the chance to buy that much again.

Nola it is the most beautiful wood, I just wish I would have bought more, thanks for letting us enjoy this rare wood.
