Was in Harbor Freight yesterday and the checkout girl gave me a pitch for joining their "Inside Tract Club". Said that they will be discontinuing sending out the mailings and emails unless you join. Cost is $29.99 per year. I declined as I don't think I would save that much in a year.

As far as I see it they could send about one tenth the mail they do and get the same results. I don't need to see their adds every other day. I have seriously gotten three separate mailing from them in one day. No way I will pay them for it.

HA! that makes me laugh. They already tried this years ago. Said the mailings and everything were too much, and they briefly stopped sending them. It failed then, it'll fail again. I'm just surprised that they don't have a long enough memory to remember that it doesn't work. And definitely not in this economy.

I joined it several years ago. Saw no benefit, did not renew.
'spect same thing will happen again, except I won't join for a second time.

They'll save money on the mailings, sure.

On a good note, they can probably save on staffing, too. This is going to affect their
foot traffic. It's the coupons that draw in shoppers. Check any HF store for crowds
on 40% off days.. I imagine that after this move, long lines won't be a problem anymore.

This is NOT a good time to change from coupons to 'exclusive privileges for fee'
I've gotten mailings from them without a single item that interested me. There's no
reason to think that the coupons I'll be paying for will be any different.

We'll see what happens..

OR

It could have been an "over-enthusiastic" sales girl looking to win the "sign up contest" taking place in her Harbor Freight store!!:eek::eek::eek:

I walked into the store 3 mo. ago and they said the same thing so we filled out a paper for "potential" members, now we have 4 brochures showing up at our house (2 from before and 2 from signing up). We didnt pay a thing...

Funny, I was there yesterday and walked up on the end of a conversation between the clerk and a guy in front of me about the "club". But she did not ask me to join. I did not hear her say they were stopping the mailings, but I did not hear the whole thing.

Good....... now maybe I'll quit being tempted by their dirt cheap prices or 20% off their dirt cheap prices to buy their junk and be forced to buy quality merchandise elsewhere!

That's great for you rich guys, but us poor "worker bees" gotta save our pennies.

And I PREFER FIFTY PERCENT off their dirt cheap prices, please!!

Eh, there are definitely some jems among the junk. I love their boxes of nitril gloves (at dirt cheap prices), and the Multi-tool they have is sweet- a deal at $35. Oh, and dead blows. Very inexpensive, and just as good as the $20 ones.

But yeah, I've had a few WTheck moments using their items.

I don't believe it for a minute

I regrip my own golf clubs once a year. The company I buy from sends me glossy mailers several times a year. They could keep the mailers and send me a free set of grips each year and I'd bet you they would save money.

Just for you, Ed...

Just get a subscription to any "guy" type magazine. I get 20% off coupons regularly in my magazines, and they usually have an expiration date 6 to 10 months in the future. I just used one out of WOOD magazine to buy a little Campbell Hausfeld 2 gallon compressor for my air stapler/nailer. It was on sale for 69.99 and with the 20% off coupon it was 59.99.

Not everything there is junk. I have an air hose line and fittings that have been through heck and back from when I was installing tile, and it's still in like new condition and not one single problem. Also have one of their 4" angle grinders that I cannot kill no matter how hard I try.

Guys........ come on, it was just a comment! Everyone knows what Harbor Freight is all about so let's not get too defensive here. I have to admit I do buy things there and am sucked in by their ads, and like was mentioned above, things like the nitrile and latex gloves are good deals. I even got a nice littel buffer and mini chop saw, remember those little chop saws, I'm probably the only one who likes them. That said, I would like to amend my statement to say:

"They provide a value oriented shopping atmosphere where good deals are to be had by all and only 87.5% of their goods are to be considered junk but after their generous 20% - 40% off discount coupons are applied, that percentage drops to 73.2%!"

Much better. You have to understand that 99% of the people take other's words as gospel on the internet. Besides, not everyone retired young with tons of money and can afford to buy a bajillion dollars worth of tools like you George!

If you check out websites like sawmill creek often you will see the venom spewed there towards harbor freight, much of which is from people who heard of a friend of a friend of a internet friend who had the problem, which I find funny because the person commenting on the quality of the tools has no direct experience with the tools themselves.

Just ask Rifleman about his defense of his Grizzly lathe on many forums we both frequent. He gets into arguements with people who have no direct experience with the product, but are badmouthing it because it doesn't say Jet or Powermatic on the label. This is half the reason why this is now the only forum I still visit on a regular basis. I don't do well with elitist attitudes or any other form of BS well.

It's usually the guys who are contractors or the like who buy a $39.99 chicago electric version of a $399.99 Dewalt tool and expect it to work the same and last as long in a 12 hour daily hard use construction environment that have the problems with HF tools.

As long as you understand that by saving yourself a few bucks, you won't be getting the long lasting pro quality tool, but it will be good for a few weekly uses by a hobbiest or home owner you'll do fine by harbor freight.
