I still got about 1/4 of a gallon and out of the hardner. (Leaked out)
Can I get some locally at a HD, Lowes or is there anything else I can use to get this stuff to gel???? Any help is appreciated....

Thank Folks.

Lupe, if you have a Michael's or other decent craft or hobby store- the catalyst for Castin' Craft is MEKP.

It tends to be pricier getting it via those folks, but in a pinch they will do.

I haven't seen anyplace like HD or Lowes carry MEKP.

I think all the HD's carry MEKP . It's not with the other cans of chemicals like Acetone and thinners and stuff , you will find it on the racks that have CA and epoxy and other adhesives . They have the quart and gallon cans of General purpose Resin in the same area .
Like dozer said any Auto parts store will have it , try NAPA or Autozone . It's used as Hardener for Fiberglass resin (which is nothing but Polyester resin) .

I just did a test yesterday. I poured a blank and forgot to add MEKP. I cooked the resin in the mold at 170* for 2 hours. Rock hard.

Doug is right,
Michael's or Hobby Lobby has the activator sold by its' self and it will work. If you cannot find it where you are let me know and I can go and get some for you and send it UPS. Let me know. Alice

PS Don is also right, with heat and time it will set up by itself.

Thank you Alice, Went to Walmart to get some Wolf brand Chili for the hot dogs and strolled over to the auto part section. There it was in a small bottle for a little under 2.00 bucks. They had the MEKP but not the Chili.......... Small towns......

Yep .. it's the heat that cures the resin, not the MEKP. The MEKP reacts
with the resin to cause the heat, but if you have heat and no MEKP it will
work just fine.

I have a friend who left a can of resin beside the radiator and it went
rock hard.

A friend.

I SAID IT WAS A FRIEND!

oh, leave me alone.

For a moment I thought you were going to tell me Wolf Brand Chili works!!!!! Ha! Ha!

I tried casting Chili in a blank once...But it ended in disaster as sung below

(In my best Vaudville song and dance routine complete with cheesy styrofoam hat and cane...)

(Sung loudly!)

"I took my parting tool...

That's the tool you use to part

I stuck it in the pen blank

and the pen blank cut a ..."

Never mind... I'd probably get banned if I completed that sentence

Sorry, I just couldn't resist the notion of a cast chili pen blank. I promise to be serious and normal next week.

(I did eat chili before a day of turning with my Triton once... I learned really quickly where the air intake on that bad boy is. Now, I wear it on the side of the hip...)

Dave

Sorry for the minor hijack... Carry on where you all left off!

Charlie , you listening to those voices in your head again ? Go outside and breathe some fresh air , once the PR vapors are gone they will be quiet .... DAMHIKT

Yes.. that is one place where the 'Buddy System" just doesn't work..

I saw the coffee bean blanks, and being a goold ole boy, decided to throw some dry pinto beans in some yellow PR. It turned out to be a good candidate for the "Never name the blank before you try it out" rule.

Looked neat, had a cool name (Beans and cornbread), but didn't turn out. I haven't given up completely... yet.
