Our A/C has iced up. The pipes going into the compressor in the unit outside are encased in ice and there is a fair amount of ice on the compressor. The radiator thingie in the air handler is just a solid block of ice.

I did some googling and it seems this is caused by either low airflow or a blocked drain. The air filter is clean and all the vents in the house are open so I'm going to check the drain tomorrow once all the ice has melted. I've turned the A/C off.

Any other hints as to what could be the problem or what I should trouble shoot would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to my parents a few times. I believe when it first started it was because of pet hair and dust collection on the condenser coil(the one inside the air handler). The condensation that normally collects on it got the hair/dust stuck to it, then after air flow was restricted it started freezing. Recently though I think they had someone look at it and refilled the refrigerant gas and that seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for the info guys. The ice is melting fast. I'll be able to start checking it out in the morning. It sounds like I need to get the freon level checked.

Keith,

Let it melt and fire it back up. It will not hurt anyting and you may be able to get some cool air out of it for a while before it freezes up again.

Yep, mine always does that every couple years and I have to get more freon installed. Unfortunately, now it died all together. I turn it on, the furnace comes on but when I look out the window, the fan on the unit isn't spinning. Sucks, I probably have to replace the whole unit, but not this year. I'm in the north, so I can survive till next summer now.

That's true Jeff, but better deals are to be had on A/C units in winter. Just like the deals on heaters in summer!

Keith,

It may be low on freon, but check the condenser coils inside blower unit they do get clogged up. You just have about 12 scews to remove... but what's a little coverplate? The real problem begins when the wife sees you take the pressure washer to the closet with the air conditioner in it.

I have that problem every once in a while, but my freon level is fine. The problem happens when the outside temperature and the humidity levels are just right, we shut it down, let it melt, and fire it back up without any problems. Luckily global warming should stop this from happening in the future...See, you can always find a positive side to everything if you look. One other thing you can do is put a six-pack on the ice to help melt it, it might not help much, but it won't hurt.
